1 cup white sugar
1 cup shortening
1 cup honey
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground ginger

Steps:

  • 1.In a saucepan over low heat, melt together sugar, shortening and honey. Let cool. 2.Mix together eggs, vanilla, baking soda and ginger. Gradually add to cooled honey mixture. 3.Slowly add 4 cups of flour to mixture. Stir until well blended. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) until golden (about 12-15 minutes).

This German cookie recipe has become a Christmas tradition in our family, but is yummy year round. The combination of orange and chocolate is wonderful!

100 g semi-sweet chocolate baking squares
125 g butter or 125 g margarine
125 g sugar
1 egg
1 orange rind, shredded
200 g flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
100 g icing sugar
2 teaspoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Grate chocolate.
  • Cream butter or margarine and sugar. Add egg and shredded orange peel.
  • Sift flour and baking powder, and add to creamed mixture along with the grated chocolate.
  • You may knead the dough together by hand.
  • Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate 2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Roll out dough to 5mm thickness, and cut with cookie cutters of desired shape.
  • Transfer cookies to cookie sheets and bake 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Remove from sheets to a rack to cool.
  • Sift icing sugar. Stir in enough orange juice to make a glaze.
  • Glaze the bottom of each cooled cookie.

1 1/2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
2/3 cup shortening
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon orange rind, grated
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups unbleached flour
1 cup raisins (optional)
1/2 cup nuts, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs, milk and orange rind.
  • Stir together baking powder, spices, salt and flour.
  • Mix into sugar mixture.
  • Stir in raisins and nuts, if desired.
  • Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F. about 10 to 12 minutes, or until done.
  • Remove from baking sheets and cool cookies on rack.
  • Store in airtight container.

1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
2 cups brown sugar
3/4 cup creamed butter
2 unbeaten eggs
3 cups sifted flour

Steps:

  • Dissolve the baking soda and cinnamon in the hot water. Add the sugar to the butter and cream 10 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time and blend in well. Add the flour, the soda and the cinnamon. Mix well.
  • Knead into a smooth dough. Roll thin, cut into small cakes.
  • Bake at 400°F until light brown.
