More Philly Stuff? You got it! Here's how to make a real Hoagie. The word Hoagie came from the sandwiches that used to get eaten by workers over on a place that was nicknamed "hog island" The workers there would bring crusty rolls with Italian meats and some olive oil and they became known as "hoggies" which eventually morphed into hoagie... Now that I've sounded like a Cliff Claven... the only other thing I have to say is don't make this with a soft roll! It has to be a GOOD crusty Italian Long Roll!

2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 hoagie rolls
1/4 lb prosciutto di Parma, thinly sliced
1/4 lb capicola, thinly sliced
1/4 lb genoa salami or 1/4 lb soprassata salami, thinly sliced
1/4 lb provolone cheese
1 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1/8 cup shredded lettuce

Steps:

  • Slice the rolls, but not all the way through.
  • Place the vinegar and oregano in a small bowl. Slowly whisk in the oil until emulsified.
  • Remove some of the bread from the center of each half of roll.(if desired)
  • Drizzle a little of the olive oil mixture on the bread.
  • Place first the meats, then the cheese in layers.
  • Top with the tomatoes, onions, then the lettuce. Drizzle with more of the dressing, as desired.

6 tomato slices (1/4 inch thick)
Shredded lettuce

Steps:

  • Halve bread lengthwise. Spread blue cheese dressing on cut side of top of bread. Combine mayonnaise and mustard; spread on cut side of bottom of bread. Layer with turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato and lettuce. Cover with top half of bread. Serve immediately.

Spicy Italian Ham and Salami Sandwich image

This "sitting sandwich" is great picnic fare because it only gets better as it sits. Pack it at the bottom of the basket so any weight on top will compress it, making it easier to eat. A mojo-like sauce made with fresh lime juice, garlic, and lots of fresh oregano perks up the flavor of a classic Italian sub.

1/2 cup finely chopped fresh oregano (about 1 small bunch)
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
6 Tbs. fresh lime juice (from 3 to 4 limes)
2 large cloves garlic, minced
Kosher salt and freshly ground white or black pepper
1 large ciabatta loaf
3 oz. tender lettuce leaves (about 3 cups)
6 oz. thinly sliced prosciutto
6 oz. thinly sliced hot capocollo
6 oz. thinly sliced soppressata
8 oz. thinly sliced provolone
1 cup drained, sliced mild or hot pickled peppers

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, mix the oregano, oil, lime juice, garlic, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (the flavor improves as it sits, and it will keep for up to 1 week).
  • Halve the ciabatta loaf lengthwise. Rewhisk the sauce and pour over the cut sides of the bread, spreading evenly with a knife. Line the bottom half with the lettuce, then top with the prosciutto, capocollo, soppressata, and provolone. Scatter the peppers over the cheese and cover with the top of the ciabatta. Smush together, cut crosswise into 6 sandwiches, and wrap each in foil or waxed paper. Let sit for a few hours at room temperature to let the flavors meld.

3.5 oz. OSCAR MAYER Deli Fresh Smoked Ham
3.5 oz. OSCAR MAYER Deli Fresh Bold Cracked Black Pepper Turkey Breast
4 KRAFT Provolone Cheese Slices
1/4 small onion, sliced (about 3 slices separated into rings)
3 cups shredded lettuce
1 small tomato, sliced
3 Tbsp. KRAFT Mayo Hot & Spicy Flavored Mayonnaise
10 slices pickled jalapeño pepper
4 oz. prepared GOOD SEASONS Italian Dressing Mix
1 foot-long French bread (with a good width, not a long skinny one)

Steps:

  • Slice French bread loaf lengthwise in half.
  • Spread Mayo on the top half of the bread. Add jalapeno slices over mayo.
  • Layer bottom half with cheese slices. Alternate ham and turkey slices across sandwich on top of cheese. Evenly distribute lettuce and onion.
  • Drizzle Italian dressing evenly over lettuce and onion.
  • Add tomato slices.
  • Put sandwich together. Slice and enjoy with friends

4 submarine sandwich rolls
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
8 slices provolone cheese
8 sliced ham
8 slices of turkey
12 slices hard salami
12 slices sandwich pepperoni
4 tablespoons Sambal Oelek Chili Paste (optional)
8 oz shredded iceberg lettuce
1 large tomato, sliced and quartered
1/4 olive oil
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
Salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Cut sandwich rolls along one seam being careful to not cut all the way through. Spread may on each side of sub roll.
  • Top each roll with cheese, ham, turkey, salami and pepperoni. Spread a tablespoon of chili paste on each sub.
  • Heat in the oven for 5 minutes or until cheese melts.
  • Meanwhile place lettuce in a bowl. Whisk together oil, vinegar and seasoning. Pour over lettuce.
  • When sandwiches have heated, divide lettuce among each of the subs and top with tomato slices.
