My family likes this tasty gravy as much as, or better than turkey gravy. You can add variations to suit whatever you are serving it with. We particularly like it with Lentil and Wild Rice Loaf (recipe 265288), but it is also great on mashed potatoes or even meat. I found this on another web site and hand copied it without noting where it came from, so I'm sorry I cannot give credit to the proper source.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (I like walnut oil for flavor) or 2 tablespoons olive oil (I like walnut oil for flavor)
2 tablespoons flour
1 garlic clove (to taste)
1 (14 ounce) can vegetable broth
1 teaspoon nutritional yeast
1 -2 tablespoon soy sauce (I use no more than 1 1/2 T)
pepper
handful chopped toasted cashews (optional)
diced red pepper
mushroom
roasted garlic
herbs
1 dash red wine (Whatever sounds good to you)

Steps:

  • Saute onion 5 minutes in oil.
  • Add flour and cook 5 more minutes until brown, and the onion is soft.
  • Add minced garlic, then gradually whisk in broth. Add cashews, if using.
  • Simmer 10 minutes while partly covered.
  • Stir in yeast, soy sauce and pepper. Mix well, then blend until desired consistency.

This gravy tastes like the stuff I grew up eating on my mashed potatoes as a kid, but it happens to be vegan and has zero artery clogging saturated animal fat.

3 cups vegetable stock
1/3 cup soy sauce, low sodium, or amino acids
1 tablespoon vegan worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon parsley
1.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
pinch pepper
5+ tablespoons thickener, cornstarch, arrowroot, potato starch
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients EXCEPT thickener (arrowroot powder, cornstarch, or flour) to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and allow to simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the thickener of your choice and water.
  • After allowing the pot on the stove to simmer for 5-minutes, pour the thickener slurry in with other ingredients and begin to whisk immediately.
  • As the gravy begins to thicken, continue whisking constantly until desired thickness is achieved. This will not take long. Then remove from heat.
  • The gravy is ready to be poured over any and everything!

1/3 cup all purpose flour (I used Pillsbury brand all purpose gluten-free flour)
2 tablespoons avocado oil
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 cups vegetable broth or 3 vegan bouillon cubes + 3 cups of water
2 tablespoons Bragg's liquid aminos

Steps:

  • Heat the avocado oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the all-purpose flour and whisk, constantly until the flour starts browning, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the nutritional yeast flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, Bragg's Liquid Aminos, and vegetable broth.
  • Whisk continuously to prevent clumps. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until thickened.
  • Serve immediately over mashed potatoes, or something else that requires a delicious, rich, and flavorful gravy.

  • While you are cooking your gravy, you can be sauteing the other mushrooms in a skillet. Just add little bits of tamari / soy sauce / No Soy and water to them (a tablespoon at a time) whenever the liquid evaporates. After about 10 minutes on medium heat they will shrink down and become very juicy and delicious. Cook them down as long as you’d like--when they look good, remove them from heat until you’re ready to serve.
