Time 20m

Yield 100 worms

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (6 ounce) package raspberry gelatin powder or 1 (6 ounce) package grape gelatin
3 (1/4 ounce) envelopes unflavored gelatin
3 cups boiling water
100 flexible plastic straws
1 tall slender 4 cup container (same height as extended straws)
3/4 cup whipping cream
12 -15 drops green food coloring

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine gelatins.
  • Add boiling water; stir until gelatins completely dissolve. Chill until lukewarm, about 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, gently pull straws to extend to full length; place in tall container.
  • Blend cream and food coloring with the lukewarm gelatin mixture. Pour into container, filling straws.
  • Chill until gelatin is firm, at least 8 hours, or cover and chill up to 2 days.
  • Pull straws from container (if using a carton, tear carton away from straws). Pull straws apart; run hot tap water for about 2 seconds over 3 to 4 straws at a time. Starting at the empty ends, push worms from straws with rolling pin, or use your fingers; lay worms on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
  • Cover and chill until ready to use, at least 1 hour or up to 2 days.
  • Worms will hold at room temperature up to 2 hours.

12 TYPICAL DISHES OF MEXICO WITH INSECTS - MEXICO DAILY POST

From mexicodailypost.com
  • Fried Ahuautles. Axayácatl is the generic name given to various species of insects that live in the lakes of the Valley of Mexico. Although it is not a properly aquatic insect, it reproduces in water and both the animal and its roe have been delicacies since pre-Hispanic times.
  • Chahuis with lemon. In Mexico there are more than 80 species of edible beetles, which are eaten mainly in the larval stage. They come mainly from four families of insects (Cerambycidae, Melolonthidae, Scarabaeidae and Passalidae) and receive other names, such as stick worm and blind hen.
  • Chachamas with garlic sauce. The spoonbill caterpillar has transcended the Puebla municipality of Zapotitlán, where there is a tradition of consumption since pre-Hispanic times to enter some gourmet dishes thanks to its characteristic flavor.
  • Dragonflies with chili peppers and lemon. Dragonflies are large-eyed anisoptera insects that live near freshwater bodies, because their nymphs are aquatic.
  • Baked Tarantulas. Among the typical Mexican dishes with insects, the roasted tarantula is one of the most unusual. Tarantulas are fundamentally the largest spiders that make up the genus Lycosa and carry a bad reputation for their supposed lethal bite, which is more myth than reality.
