1 ⅛ cups warm water
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup bread flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
¼ cup potato flakes
1 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

Steps:

  • Combine water and butter in a bread machine pan. Add, respectively, the whole wheat flour, bread flour, salt, sugar, and potato flakes; top with yeast, assuring yeast and salt do not mix.
  • Select Whole Wheat cycle; press Start.
  • Remove loaf from pan to a wire rack to cool.

There's nothing like coming home to the smell of freshly baked whole wheat french bread! This is a no knead recipe which makes it totally doable to me. It's perfect served with a nice hot bowl of soup!

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 1/2 cup warm water
2 TBSP yeast
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
6 cup whole wheat flour (add more as needed)

Steps:

  • Combine warm water, yeast and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer. Let sit for about 10 minutes until bubbly and activated.
  • Add remaining ingrdients. Using a dough hook mix until combined. Check consistency of dough. Dough should be soft but not sticky. If it is too sticky add additional flour one Tablespoon at a time until consistency is soft.
  • Continue mixing dough on low speed for 5 mintues.
  • Cover bowl with towel and allow to sit in a warm place for 10 minutes. Punch dough down. Cover and repeat process tow more times for a total of 30 minutes of rising.
  • After the third time divide the dough in half. Shape in two long loaves on a floured surface. Place loaves on a greased baking sheet.
  • Cut diagonal slices in the tops of each loaf. Whisk egg whie. Brush with egg mixture.
  • Cover and let rise about 15-20 minutes.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
  • Let sit in bread pans for a couple minutes, then turn out onto a cooling rack and let cool.

This is a super easy recipe for whole wheat French bread. Even though you can buy it in the store, homemade bread just can't be beat.

3/4 cup water (room temperature)
1 tsp. active dry yeast
2 tsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cup bread flour
2 tbsp. cornmeal (for baking sheet)

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix water and yeast. Add brown sugar , salt, and whole wheat flour. Mix well. Slowly add in remaining bread flour, enough to make a dough that follows the spoon around the bowl.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 4 minutes, adding more flour as needed until the dough is soft and smooth to the touch.
  • Place dough in a medium-sized greased bowl. Turn dough over in a bowl so that the top is also lightly greased .
  • Cover dough with a clean cloth and let rise in warm, draft-free place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Grease and sprinkle cornmeal over a baking sheet. Punch down dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead for 4 minutes or until the bubbles are out of the bread.
  • Roll out dough into a long rectangle, about 15 inches in length. Roll up dough along the long side. Pinch seams and tuck under ends . Place loaf on a prepared baking sheet.
  • Cover and let rise in warm, draft-free place for 45 minutes or until doubled in size.​
  • Use a sharp knife to cut 4 or 5 slashes across the top. Bake bread at 375 F for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove bread from the sheet and let cool on a rack.

Steps:

  • Combine according to your manufacturer's directions.
  • Success Hints: To develop the crisp crust that French Bread is known for, use your French cycle.
  • If your machine doesn't have a French cycle, simply start your machine and let it go through the first knead, then stop and restart it from the beginning again.
  • This gives the bread extra kneading time and results in a crisp crust.
  • Because of the distinctive chewy French crust, it is recommended that this bread is served within 24 hours to avoid toughness.

  • Place all dough ingredients (through yeast) in the bread machine in the order listed. Put the yeast in a well in the center of the flour. Select the dough cycle and press start.
  • Once the bread machine stops (it was one and a half hours on my machine). Remove the pan from the bread machine and punch the dough down (deflate it), then cover and let it rise a second time, until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  • Remove the dough and place it on a floured surface and knead for 1 minute. Roll the dough into a rectangle. Roll up jelly roll fashion and pinch the seam together. Tuck the ends underneath. Line a baking sheet with a silpat mat and sprinkle with cornmeal. Place the bread on the prepared baking sheet; cover and let rise until it doubles in size, at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Carefully make several evenly placed diagonal cuts (with a sharp knife) on top of the loaf. Beat together the egg white and 1 tablespoon of water then brush over each loaf with a pastry brush.
