1 1/2 lbs moose, cubed (or steak)
4 teaspoons soya sauce
1 onion, chopped
3 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup uncooked rice
1 cup water (or stock of your choice)
1 (12 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 (12 ounce) can sliced mushrooms
1 cup peas
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Brown meat, onion and celery in oil in frypan. Transfer to casserole dish.
  • Mix remaining 9 ingredients together in a bowl. Pour over meat and bake in a 350 oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until rice is cooked.
  • Add veggies of your choice, diced small, and herbs/spices to taste. This can be cooked in Slow Cooker all day....meat is tenderer.
  • Serve with bannock or baking powder bisquits.

1 (10 ounce) package frozen raspberries, thawed
1 (10 ounce) package frozen strawberries, thawed
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 cup cold water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
slivered almonds

Steps:

  • Purée berries in blender or press through sieve. Mix cornstarch and sugar in saucepan. Gradually stir in water; add purée. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice. Pour into dessert dishes or serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Sprinkle with almonds; serve with half and half if desired.

2 cups rhubarb, chopped
1 1/4 cups white sugar
4 cups water
1 cup mixed berry
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon white sugar

Steps:

  • In a saucepan over low heat, bring the rhubarb, sugar, and 2 cups of water to a boil. Simmer until rhubarb is soft.
  • Mash the berries and add to the rhubarb. Add the rest of the water. Bring to a boil again and remove from heat.
  • Mix the cornstarch and a bit of water separately. Add to the saucepan and let simmer for a few minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Serve with a bit of granulated sugar sprinkled on top.

1 cup johnnycake white cornmeal
2 cups cold water
1/4 cup butter
1 cup fruit juice (blackberry, blueberry, or raspberry)
2 cups berries
1 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup cream
3/4 cup maple syrup
3 eggs, beaten

Steps:

  • Soak the cornmeal in the water. Melt the butter in a large pot the add the cornmeal mixture. Heat slowly, stir constantly for 15 minutes, or until thickened.
  • Add the juice, berries, & nutmeg then bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Then add the cream & maple syrup, blending throughly.
  • Add the eggs & remove from the heat, stirring until the mixture stops bubbling. Serve either hot or chilled.

2 1/4 lbs sour cherries (assorted red fruits, in any combination) or 2 1/4 lbs plums (assorted red fruits, in any combination)
1/2 cup sugar (or more to taste, depending on the tartness of the fruit)
1 quart water
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 cup rum (optional)
milk or cream, to serve with the dessert

Steps:

  • Wash fruit and pick through for stems (reserve 3/4 cup).
  • Combine the remaining fruit with water (reserving 1 cup), and sugar in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil and cook fruit over medium heat until done but still holding its shape.
  • Sweeten to taste with more sugar, if needed.
  • Stir corn starch into reserved water until dissolved and stir into the juice.
  • Bring to boil, cook until thickened, and remove from heat.
  • Blend in the rum if desired.
  • Mash reserved, uncooked fruit in blender and stir into the thickened juice.
  • Eat Rote Grütze either hot or cold and serve with cold milk or cream.

2 eggs, beaten
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream

  • Mix all ingredients together and put in a buttered casserole dish.

Very simple easy yummy recipe. This is a Native American dish (which I am not) with a couple of twists that I added. The dish is actually called Wajapa and wasicu meens white man in Dacota and Lacota Sioux.

2 lbs mixed berries
3/4 cup simple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons lemons

Steps:

  • Place berries in a med saucepan, cover with cold water, place over med high heat, bring to a boil stirring often. Add sweetener, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Continue to boil and stir until berries brake down. Add cold water to corn starch and some about ( 2 tbs) of hot liquid from pan and make slurry stirring it slowly back into mix, continue to boil and stir until thick. Let pudding cool, serve warm or chilled, great hot over fry bread.
