The BEST barbecue sauce from scratch. An easy tangy and sweet homemade barbecue sauce recipe without ketchup. Ready in 15 minutes!

15 ounces tomato sauce ((1 standard can))
6 ounces tomato paste ((1 standard can))
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/8-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper ((optional but encouraged))

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, stir together all of the ingredients: tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, dry mustard, garlic, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Cover with a lid slightly ajar so that the pot is mostly covered to deter splattering, but steam can still escape and the sauce can reduce. Let cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Enjoy immediately or let cool and store for later use.

1 ½ cups brown sugar
1 ½ cups ketchup
½ cup red wine vinegar
½ cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 ½ tablespoons dry mustard
2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons salt
1 ½ teaspoons black pepper
2 dashes hot pepper sauce

Steps:

  • In a blender, combine brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce. Season with mustard, paprika, salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce. Blend until smooth.

1 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
1 to 2 tablespoons water, optional

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered until slightly thickened, 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate leftovers.

1/4 cup chopped onion
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
2 tablespoons margarine or 2 tablespoons butter
1 cup ketchup
1/3 cup finely packed brown sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons instant beef bouillon or 2 teaspoons chicken flavor instant bouillon
1 teaspoon prepared mustard

Steps:

  • In small saucepan, cook onion and garlic in margarine until tender. Add remaining ingredients; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat; simmer uncovered 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate leftovers.
  • Use as a basting sauce for grilled beef, chicken or pork.
  • MICROWAVE:.
  • In 1-qt. glass measure with handle, melt margarine on HIGH for 30-45 seconds.
  • Add onion and garlic; cook on HIGH for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until tender.
  • Add remaining ingredients; cook loosely covered on HIGH for 3-5 minutes or until mixture boils; stir.
  • Reduce heat to MEDIUM (50% power); cook covered 4-5 minutes to blend flavors.
