GREAT GRANDMA'S SOUR CREAM DROP COOKIES
This recipe was on a card tucked into my mom's recipe box; it's pretty similar to a number of variations that seem to be from the 1930s. A note said "flavor with whatever you like" and of all the flavors I played around with, I thought lemon zest balanced the sweet dough the best. These bake up into tender little cakes that make a great base for whoopie pies. Once baked, they freeze well (thaw for an hour or so on the counter to eat), but start losing their tenderness after more than one day at room temperature.

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line two rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream sugar, shortening, and butter together in the bowl of a stand mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute.
- Mix in sour cream and lemon zest on low speed until no streaks of sour cream remain. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on medium-low just until there are no streaks of yolk, and scraping down the sides of the bowl between additions. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder all at once and mix just to combine.
- Drop by heaping tablespoons on the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are puffy and spring back when lightly touched with a finger, about 10 minutes. They should be light golden, with occasional spots of pale golden brown.

Steps:
- Line a baking sheet with parchment. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in granulated and brown sugars, salt, and sour cream. Raise heat to medium-low, and cook, whisking frequently, until sugar has dissolved. Raise heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring frequently and scraping sides of pan with a spatula, until mixture reaches the soft-ball stage (240 degrees), 10 to 15 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Carefully stir in bourbon and vanilla (mixture will steam and bubble). Let cool, without stirring, for 2 minutes. Add pecans, and beat vigorously with a spoon until slightly opaque but still creamy, about 2 minutes.
- Drop spoonfuls onto baking sheet. (If mixture in pan begins to harden, stir in 1 teaspoon hot water, as often as needed; if it becomes runny, stir until firm.) Let stand until set, about 30 minutes.

UPSIDE DOWN PRALINE SOUR CREAM BISCUITS
A perfect soft biscuit with a crunchy praline top to go with a cup a coffee in the morning. These would be nice to wake up to on Christmas or Thanksgiving morning or just for a special treat. Steps:
- 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt butter in 10-inch cast iron skillet. This can be done in oven while it preheats, just don't burn your butter.
- 2. Stir brown sugar and pecans into melted butter; spread evenly over bottom of skillet.
- 3. Combine baking mix, salt and raisins with sour cream; stir for about 30 seconds until combined and moist. Add a little more sour cream (or a little milk) if needed.
- 4. Divide dough into 9 equal pieces; place over pecan mixture. It will take about 1/4 cup per biscuit. Bake for 18 minutes or until golden brown.
- 5. Invert onto plate and serve hot with a cup of coffee or a cup of hot cocoa. Enjoy!
