Number Of Ingredients 14

8 ounces tomato sauce
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
2 tablespoons molasses (optional)
¼ cup brown sugar (up to 1/3 cup for a sweeter BBQ sauce)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
2 tablespoons tomato paste (optional, for a thicker, stronger tomato flavor bbq sauce)

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, honey, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic and onion powder, ground pepper, and salt. Whisk until combined.
  • Simmer barbecue sauce, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until the sauce has thickened to your liking. Cook it for a bit longer if you prefer a thicker sauce. Test for seasoning keeping in mind that flavors will deepen as the sauce has a chance to cool.
  • Store barbecue sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

TRIP YOUR TRIGGER BARBECUE SAUCE

Trip your trigger barbecue sauce image

I have made this sauce quite a few times and everyone just loves this. My mom (mother-in-law)just does flip-flops over it. She puts it on everything. This makes an excellent and very different sauce. Use this sauce to marinate, barbecue or just as a dipping sauce. Mom will give you a thumbs up if it is setting on the table "any" time of day. This is great for any type of meat and I bet it is great on shrimp too! I tweaked this recipe from Twyla Cook's "Spicy Tomato Jam" on JAP.

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 can(s) tomato sauce, 15 oz
1 can(s) tomato paste, 6 oz
1 1/3 cup(s) sugar
2/3 cup(s) brown sugar, firmly packed
2 tablespoon(s) ginger paste
1/4 teaspoon(s) chile pepper paste (for mild) or more to your taste
1/2 teaspoon(s) cloves, ground
2 tablespoon(s) cinnamon, ground
1/2 teaspoon(s) cumin powder
1/8 teaspoon(s) nutmeg, ground
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
4 tablespoon(s) cider vinegar
3/4 cup(s) lemon juice

Steps:

  • Get all of your ingredients ready. In a medium sauce pan, add tomato sauce and tomato paste.
  • Simmer over medium to low heat. As sauce is heating, add all the rest of the ingredients one at a time and stir after each addition.
  • Simmer for 35 minutes. Stirring every once in a while. Taste and adjust to your taste... Pour into a 1 quart jar to store in the refrigerator.
  • This is great for marinade (add enough sauce to slather meat) and put in a ziplock bag and let it set for at least 1 hour. Then bake or barbecue. As a barbecue sauce: baste your meat the last few minutes. As a dipping sauce: put into a small dish to serve with your meal.
