TOM AND JERRY

Tom and Jerry image

Almost like eggnog, but warm and creamy. We have an annual Christmas Tom & Jerry Party and this is the recipe we've perfected.

Categories     Drinks Recipes     Eggnog Recipes

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 5

12 eggs
1 ¼ cups confectioners' sugar
20 fluid ounces brandy
24 cups milk
1 pinch ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Separate the eggs. In a large bowl beat the egg whites until frothy. Whisk in 3/4 cup of the confectioners' sugar and beat until stiff peaks are formed.
  • Beat the egg yolks with the remaining 1/2 cup of confectioners' sugar and about 4 to 5 tablespoons of the brandy until light and lemon colored. Fold the egg whites into the egg yolks and refrigerate.
  • In a large stock pot heat the milk until hot but do not boil. Reduce heat and keep milk hot.
  • To each mug add 2 tablespoons brandy (or more to taste) and 1 large heaping tablespoon of egg mixture. Stir and fill mug with hot milk. Place another tablespoon of egg mixture on top and sprinkle with nutmeg.

TOM AND JERRY BATTER

Tom and Jerry Batter image

This is a holiday drink that my family enjoys in the winter. The batter makes an excellent topping for both alcoholic beverages as well as hot cocoa, eggnog, or warm milk for the kids.

Time 30m

Yield 72

Number Of Ingredients 8

12 eggs, separated
½ teaspoon salt
1 pound butter, room temperature
3 pounds confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground allspice

Steps:

  • Beat egg whites and salt until foamy in a large glass or metal mixing bowl until stiff peaks form. Lift your beater or whisk straight up: the egg whites should form a sharp peak that holds its shape.
  • Beat the egg yolks to soft peaks in a separate bowl. Beat the butter and confectioners' sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and vanilla to the butter mixture; mix. Stir in the nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and the egg whites; beat until well blended. Batter can be frozen or kept in refrigerator for several weeks.
  • To make a Tom and Jerry, fill a cup of hot water with spiced rum or brandy, warm milk, hot cocoa, or eggnog and stir in 1 heaping tablespoon of batter.

TOM AND JERRY MIX

This is a wonderful hot Christmas beverage similar to a warm eggnog.

Categories     Drinks Recipes     Eggnog Recipes

Time 20m

Yield 56

Number Of Ingredients 9

½ pound butter
1 ½ pounds confectioners' sugar
6 eggs, separated
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground mace
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom

Steps:

  • Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Add the egg yolks one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the butter mixture before adding the next. Beat egg whites until foamy in a large glass or metal mixing bowl, continuing to beat until soft peaks form. Lift your beater or whisk straight up: the egg whites will form soft mounds rather than a sharp peak. Mix the egg whites into the egg yolk mixture. Stir in the rum, salt, mace, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, and cardamom.
  • To use the mix, combine 1 ounce rum and 1 cup hot milk in a mug. Stir in 1 tablespoon of the Tom and Jerry mixture.

TOM AND JERRY

Tom and Jerry image

This drink has nothing to do with the cartoon cat and mouse, or Jerry Thomas, the celebrated New York barman of the 1800s, who often boasted of inventing it. It is a rich holiday elixir, a relative of eggnog that flourished in America in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and is frequently (though not definitively) credited to Pierce Egan, the English chronicler of sports and popular culture. Robert Simonson brought this version of the drink, which is especially popular in Wisconsin and is bordering states, to The Times in 2012. It is adapted from Audrey Saunders, the owner of the Manhattan cocktail bar Pegu Club. She decreased the sugar and added Angostura bitters and vanilla. "It makes a huge difference," she said. It's best on snowy days, when it can warm and comfort from within.

Yield 1 drink, with batter for about 10 drinks

Number Of Ingredients 12

6 eggs (yolks and whites separated)
1 pound sugar
1 ounce añejo rum
3 tablespoons vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 dashes Angostura bitters
6 ounces milk
1 ounce añejo rum
1 ounce V.S. Cognac

Steps:

  • Make the batter: In a bowl, beat egg yolks until they are as thin as water. While beating, gradually add sugar, rum, vanilla, spices and bitters. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff. Fold into yolk mixture. If not using immediately, refrigerate batter.
  • Make the drink: In a small saucepan, bring milk to boil. Meanwhile, warm a roughly 10-ounce Irish coffee mug in the oven. Pour in 2 ounces batter. Add 1 ounce rum and 1 ounce Cognac. Fill with boiling milk, stirring briskly with a small whisk while adding, so batter and milk are well mixed. Dust with nutmeg.

TOM AND JERRY MIX

Categories     Christmas     Nutmeg

Number Of Ingredients 10

12 eggs, separated
1/2 tsp salt
1 pound butter
3 pounds powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp brandy or rum flavoring (I used the real stuff)
1 tsp mace
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp all spice.

Steps:

  • Beat egg whites until stiff. Beat egg yolks until light. Cream butter and powdered sugar until well mixed (Betty's mother-in-law's recipe said 'until crumbly', but that never happened......I just mixed mine until smooth.). Add yolks and all other seasonings. Fold in egg whites Then.....after you make the batter, you put a shot of brandy and a shot of rum (or two shots of brandy) in a tall mug. Fill with boiling water. Add 2-3 tablespoons of Tom and Jerry mix and ENJOY! You need to add enough batter so it isn't 'weak' if you know what I mean....it is good after coming in from the cold.

For the batter:
12 fresh eggs, separated
3 pounds granulated white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
2 ounces añejo rum
For the drink:
2 tablespoons of batter
1 1/2 ounces brandy
1/2 ounce añejo rum
3 or 4 ounces boiling water
Freshly grated nutmeg, for dusting

Steps:

  • For the batter:
  • In a large bowl, beat egg yolks until they are thin as water, adding the sugar while beating. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff. Add the spices and rum to the yolks. Mix in the stiff whites and stir until the mixture is the consistency of a light batter. (1 teaspoon of cream of tartar or 1/4 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda will prevent the sugar from settling to the bottom of the batter.)
  • For the drink:
  • Put the batter in the bottom of a ceramic mug, add the spirits and the boiling water and stir. Dust with nutmeg and serve.
