TODD'S RUSSIAN TEA

Todd's Russian Tea image

This recipe is based on my mother's Russian Tea recipe. I serve this at every Christmas party I host. I don't know why this beverage is called "Russian Tea." However, many people in rural North Carolina make a version of it around the winter holidays.

Categories     Punch Beverage

Time 45m

Yield 5 quarts, 20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/2 teaspoons whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 1/2-2 cups white sugar
1 (12 ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate
1 (12 ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate
15 teaspoons loose tea (or 3 family-size teabags)
5 quarts fresh preferably bottled water

Steps:

  • Place 3 qts of water in a large pot, and add cloves and cinnamon sticks.
  • Bring water to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 25 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and place a mesh tea-infusion basket of tea (or 3 teabags) into the pot. Steep tea for only 5 minutes.
  • After removing the tea-infusion basket or teabags, add sugar to the pot and stir until it dissolves.
  • Add cans of concentrate, plus 2 qts of water.
  • Bring the whole mixture up to temperature and serve hot.
  • This tea refrigerates well for a few days with the cloves and cinnamon sticks removed. Always serve hot, though.

DELICIOUS RUSSIAN TEA

Delicious Russian Tea image

When I was a kid, my Mom would always make this for me when I was sick. It is warm and soothing, and gives you a full day's worth of vitamin C due to the citric acid in the Tang (just like the astronauts drink!) and lemonade mix. Moms are a sneaky and underhanded bunch, but we love them anyway.

MAMA'S OLD-FASHIONED RUSSIAN TEA

Mama's Old-Fashioned Russian Tea image

Our instant Russian Tea mixes with Tang and instant tea powder are good, but nothing can compare to coming in to the wonderful aroma of this old-fashioned beverage as it simmers on the stove! It brings back special memories of Christmas time when I was a child and this was our "special holiday treat" during World War II.

RUSSIAN TEA

I love this tangy beverage on a cold winter's morning when I want something tasty and hot, but don't want coffee! It makes a great gift from your kitchen, too! If calories are your concern, use an artificially sweetened orange drink mix, eliminate the sugar and sweeten to taste with sugar substitute.
