I got this recipe from an aunt and made a couple of changes to suit our tastes. With ground beef and bacon mixed in, these satisfying beans are a big hit at backyard barbecues and church picnics. I'm always asked to bring my special beans. -Julie Currington, Gahanna, Ohio

1/2 pound ground beef
5 bacon strips, diced
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cans (16 ounces each) pork and beans, undrained
1 can (16 ounces) butter beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large skillet, cook and crumble beef with bacon and onion over medium heat until beef is no longer pink; drain., Stir in sugars, ketchup, barbecue sauce, molasses, mustard, chili powder and salt until blended. Stir in beans. Transfer to a greased 2-1/2-qt. baking dish. Bake, covered, until beans reach desired thickness, about 1 hour. , Freeze option: Freeze cooled bean mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if necessary.

1/2 lb bacon, fried, drained and chopped
1/2 lb hamburger, cooked and drained
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can pork and beans
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, drained
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

Steps:

  • In a large bowl combine cooked bacon, hamburger, onion, kidney beans, pork and beans and butter beans.
  • Mix together brown and white sugar, ketchup, molasses and dry mustard. Combine this mixture with the beans.
  • Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

This is my summer time dish for all BBQ's and I always double the recipe. If you enjoy baked beans you have to try this one. It's from a '98 TOH and whenever I make it someone always asks for the recipe. I have personally never made it in the oven since the crock pot does just fine and who wants to heat up the house in the summer? When using the crock pot I will take the lid off for the last hour or so (+/-) of cooking - this will thicken it up if you like your beans thick right at serving. Leftovers freeze very well.

1/2 lb ground beef
5 slices bacon, diced
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 (16 ounce) cans pork and beans, undrained
1 (16 ounce) can butter beans, rinsed and drained
1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup catsup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce (I use KC Masterpiece original or hickory)
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over med.
  • heat, brown beef, bacon and onion; drain.
  • Add beans.
  • Combine remaining ingredients and stir into bean mixture.
  • Pour into a greased 2 1/2 qt baking dish.
  • Bake uncovered at 350° for 1 hour or until beans reach desired thickness.
  • OR place in greased crock pot and heat on low for 4 hours or so.

I've come across many recipes for baked beans through the years, but none have the right amount of "kick." I created this recipe from several different ideas I've gathered over time. It's my husband's favorite.

6 bacon strips, cut into 1-inch pieces
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (28 ounces) baked beans
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (16 ounces) butter beans, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, partially cook the bacon. Remove with a slotted spoon to paper towels. Drain, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings. In the drippings, saute onion and garlic until tender. In a large bowl, combine the beans, onion mixture and bacon. Stir in the brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, chili powder and pepper. , Transfer to a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 50-60 minutes or until bubbly.

  • Heat up olive oil on medium high heat in a casserole dish and carefully add the sausages. Brown the sausages all over until golden brown. Remove from the pan and transfer to a plate.

  • Grilled ham and cheese. These sandwiches don’t take a long time to make and I LOVE grilled sandwiches. The ham adds some extra protein. Bread: $1.00. Deli ham: $2.49.
  • Spaghetti. This could make a good meal prep recipe, too! Just divide everything into containers and you can bring them into work. Box of spaghetti: $1.00.
  • Mac and cheese with tuna and peas. This one is simple and can stretch the budget! Feel free to use a carrot and pea blend instead, or canned chicken instead of canned tuna.
  • Spanish rice with ground turkey and diced tomatoes. This was a new recipe for me and it was quite good! You can add a dollop of sour cream if you have any.
  • Baked potatoes. Baked potatoes are so versatile. Here, I added broccoli, sour cream, and butter. But you could replace one of those with cheese, bacon bits, or other favorite toppings.
  • Egg noodles with butter and Parmesan. This was one of my husband’s favorites growing up. Add a little bit of garlic powder or pepper to spice things up too!
