Sloppy Joe with Ground Turkey image

This is an easy, healthier version of a sloppy joe that the family will love! You can serve with endives instead of hamburger buns. Use whatever type of cheese you like.

1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 ½ pounds ground turkey
1 tomato, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
¾ green bell pepper, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 pinch red pepper flakes
salt and ground black pepper to taste
4 ounces tomato paste
1 lemon, juiced
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
6 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat. Cook and stir garlic in hot oil until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Break ground turkey into the pot. Cover pot with lid and cook meat until browned on the outside, 2 to 3 minutes. With a slivered wooden spoon, break meat up into very small pieces; continue to cook and stir until nearly completely browned, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Stir tomato, onion, green bell pepper, parsley, and red pepper flakes into the turkey mixture; season with salt and black pepper; cook until the tomato softens, 3 to 4 minutes. Add tomato past and lemon juice; stir to coat vegetables with tomato paste. Cover pot with lid, reduce heat to low, and cook until the vegetables are tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Serve on toasted hamburger buns topped with cheese.

No green pepper in this recipe, so it's a hit with kids. We added this to the menu at a children's camp, and it has been a favorite for several years. The mixture is thick, so they are 'neat' rather than sloppy. This freezes and reheats well.

2 pounds lean ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until evenly browned, stirring to crumble. I like to use a potato masher to even out the lumps. Add onion and celery, cover the pan, and cook until tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Drain off any grease.
  • Stir the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and garlic powder. Heat to a simmer over low heat, and cook until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently to prevent it from burning on the bottom.
  • Spoon the hot beef mixture onto buns, which may be toasted first, and serve.

This is a much better recipe than the one I posted before. I've been tweaking it and tweaking it! The veggies listed are the ones I always use, but sometimes I add others - a carrot or parsnip, green beans, anything! Add a little water if it feels too chunky or dry.

1 onion, peeled and quartered
1 red pepper, seeded and cut into chunks
2 stalks celery, cut into chunks
4 garlic cloves, peeled
20 g oil
500 g ground beef
140 g ketchup
45 g Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Place onion, red pepper and celery into TM bowl. Chop 10 seconds/speed 5. While chopping drop the garlic cloves onto the whirling blades.
  • Add oil to TM bowl. Saute veggies for 5 minutes/100 degrees/speed 2.
  • Add ground beef to TM bowl. Cook 5 minutes/100 degrees/speed 2.
  • Add all remaining ingredients to TM bowl. Cook 5 minutes/100 degrees/speed 2.
  • Serve over hamburger buns or rolls (I usually use Thermomix Basic Bread #2, food.com #442374).

100 g water
45 g Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Chop onion,bell pepper, and celery 10 seconds/speed 3. While chopping, drop garlic cloves onto whirling blades. Scrape down sides.
  • Add the oil to TM bowl. Saute vegetables 5 minutes/100 degrees/speed 2.
  • Add all remaining ingredients. Cook 15 minutes/100 degrees/speed 1 with MC on.
  • Turn down to 90 degrees when the mixture begins to steam rapidly.
  • Serve over hamburger buns or rolls.
