This recipe has been around longer than I have. It is one of those recipes that I never mess up. I make this for school lunches and press into muffin tins for perfect lunch-size pieces. It never lasts long in our house.

8 cups puffed wheat cereal
⅓ cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup corn syrup
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Pour cereal into a large bowl.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir brown sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract into melted butter; cook until mixture begins to bubble, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat, pour butter mixture over cereal, and stir to until cereal is coated. Spoon and press cereal mixture into muffin cups or a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

This recipe was developed by one of my grandmother's friends. It makes a lovely puffed wheat cake with lots of flavor. No baking required for this recipe.

8 cups puffed wheat cereal
1 cup brown sugar, not packed
½ cup butter
½ cup corn syrup
3 tablespoons Dutch-process cocoa (such as Fry's®)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Place puffed wheat cereal in a large bowl.
  • Combine brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Pour sugar mixture over puffed wheat cereal in the bowl; stir until cereal is evenly coated. Spread evenly into the lined pan. Cool until set, about 30 minutes. Cut into squares.

This Easy Puffed Wheat Cake recipe is a classic! If you love chocolate, you are going to love this delicious old time favorite!

12 cups puffed wheat (or about 200g)
3/4 cup corn syrup (light or dark)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2/3 cup butter
1/3 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Measure the puffed wheat into a large mixing bowl. Line a large cookie or baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a saucepan, bring the corn syrup, sugars, butter and cocoa to a boil.
  • Cook at low heat, boiling for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla. Immediately pour over puffed wheat.
  • Press into prepared pan. You may want to press with greased fingers to be sure it is pressed in well
  • Allow to cool completely at which time you can cut into squares and serve.

9 cups plain puffed wheat cereal ((not the sugar-coated variety))
2/3 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
2/3 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
a pinch of sea salt

Steps:

  • Measure the puffed wheat cereal into a large bowl and set aside.
  • Grease a 9-inch by 13-inch rectangular baking pan and line it with parchment paper (if desired).
  • In a medium pan on the stove, over medium-low heat, add the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt.
  • Using a whisk, gently stir the mixture together as everything melts and comes to a soft boil.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and pour the mixture over the puffed wheat cereal. Stir everything together very well with a spatula.
  • Press the mixture into the prepared pan and place in the fridge for about 1 hour.
  • Slice and serve, or store in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.

1 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
5 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
9 cups puffed wheat cereal

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients except vanilla and puffed wheat in a sauce pan.
  • Bring to just a boil over medium heat. Just boil it until "3 bubbles" pop. Do not stir very much, just enough so it won't burn.
  • Take pot off of the heat and add the vanilla and mix it inches.
  • Pour sauce over puffed wheat and mix until all is coated with the sauce.
  • Pour into a 9x13 pan and let cool.
  • Enjoy.
