This is a family favorite of green beans, cheese, sour cream, and cereal crumbs.

Number Of Ingredients 10

5 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons grated onion
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
1 cup sour cream
8 ounces Swiss cheese, grated
2 (15 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
1 cup cornflakes cereal crumbs

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • In a 3 quart saucepan combine 2 tablespoons melted butter, flour, onion, sugar, salt, pepper, sour cream and 4 ounces of the cheese. Cook over low heat and stir constantly until thickened. Fold in green beans. Pour into a 2 quart casserole dish and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.
  • In a small bowl combine cereal crumbs and melted butter; sprinkle over beans.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes.

4 TB butter (divided)
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 TB flour
1/2 tsp pepper
1 TB sugar
1 cup sour cream
1 cup crushed cornflakes

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees .
  • Drain the French Style Green Beans in a colander.

When I make this special-occasion veggie dish, I am ALWAYS asked for the recipe. Fresh steamed green beans provide a contrast to decadent melted Swiss cheese and crunchy topping. A family holiday favorite throughout my extended family. You can prepare ahead of time, leaving 4 to 5 minutes to steam the green beans and add other ingredients. Put into oven right before serving dinner (we usually put it in while carving the turkey).

1 ½ pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons grated onion
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups sour cream
8 ounces coarsely shredded Swiss cheese
2 cups corn flakes, crushed
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add green beans, cover, and steam until slightly tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir 2 tablespoons butter, flour, onion, sugar, and salt together in a saucepan over medium heat; gradually stir in sour cream. Cook and stir mixture until hot, thickened, and smooth, about 10 minutes. Add steamed green beans to the cream mixture. Pour green bean-cream mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish; sprinkle with Swiss cheese.
  • Mix corn flakes and 2 tablespoons butter in a bowl until well coated; sprinkle over Swiss cheese layer.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is bubbling and topping is browned, about 20 minutes.

1/4 cup panko or bread crumbs
4 tbsp melted butter
1/4 cup fresh grated parmesan
2 tbsp flour
1 small minced onion
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 cup sour cream
4 cup whole cooked green beans
2 cup grated swiss cheese
1/4 tsp pepper

Steps:

  • Mix bread crumbs with 2 tbls of melted butter and parmesan, set aside for the topping.
  • Place the remaining butter in a large saucepan over low heat and stir in flour, salt, pepper, onion, and sugar. Add sour cream and stir constantly until sauce is bubbly and thick. Remove from heat and fold green beans into sauce.
  • Spread half of the green bean mixture into a cooking oil sprayed baking dish. Sprinkle half of the swiss cheese onto the green bean mixture. Spread the remaining green bean mixture over cheese. Top with the remaining swiss cheese and sprinkle on the panko crumb topping.

  • Melt 2 tablespoons butter in saucepan. Blend in flour, salt, sugar & pepper; add milk, blend well and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat, stir in onion, sour cream and blend mixture with green beans.
  • Layer green bean mixture and Swiss cheese in a buttered 2 qt. casserole dish. Combine cornflakes crumbs with 2 tablespoons melted butter and spread on top of bean mixture.
  • Bake in a 400°F preheated oven for 30 minutes.

2 tablespoons chopped onion
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper

2 cups milk
1-1/2 cups (6 ounces each) shredded Swiss cheese
1 package (16 ounces) frozen French-style green beans, thawed and drained
1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, saute onion in butter until tender. Stir in the four, salt, pepper and mustard until blended. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat to low; stir in cheese just until melted., Stir in beans until coated. Transfer to a greased 2-qt. baking dish. This is my friend Joe Comb's recipe -- he was a great friend and a great cook! He moved away from the Atlanta area several years ago, and I no longer know how to contact him. Wherever Joe is, I hope he is aware of Recipe Zaar -- The original recipe called for french cut green beans, but I prefer whole beans that I can actually chew! 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 pounds blanched fresh beans can be substituted!

3 (14 1/2 ounce) cans green beans, drained or 2 1/2-2 3/4 lbs blanched fresh beans
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons flour

1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons onions, minced (optional)
8 ounces swiss cheese, grated (or minced)
16 ounces sour cream
1 1/2-2 cups corn flakes or 1 1/2-2 cups crushed buttery crackers

Steps:
