Mom's 'Sweet 'n' Sours' Pork Ribs image

My Mom's longtime recipe that she learned from my grandmother who has long passed on. Combines soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, dry mustard, garlic, as well as a few other simple ingredients to make a delicious sauce for sweet and sour cut ribs. Great over rice! Some say rice and this sauce is their favorite food! A Lechner family tradition!

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup white sugar
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon dry mustard
2 cups water
½ cup soy sauce
½ cup vinegar
2 pounds pork spareribs, cut into bite size pieces
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, chopped

Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix the sugar, flour, salt, pepper, and mustard. Stir in the water, soy sauce, and vinegar.
  • Place the ribs in a pot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, cook 10 minutes, and drain.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, and brown the ribs on all sides. Mix in the sauce mixture. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer 30 minutes. Mix in the garlic, and continue cooking 15 minutes, or to desired doneness.

I tried these at a family reunion and loved them! These are so easy to make. You throw a few ingredients together, throw them in the roasting pan and let the oven do all the work. The end is fall off the bone ribs and a yummy sauce that goes great with rice!

3 lbs ribs, cut into sections
1 cup vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup ketchup
1 cup tomato juice
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 pinch salt
1 pinch pepper
1 pinch paprika

Steps:

  • Put ribs in roasting pan.
  • Mix remaining ingredients together.
  • Pour over ribs.
  • Bake at 325°F for 3 hours.
  • Baste or "rotate" the ribs during cooking to make sure all of them get a nice coating of the sauce.

1/3 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 garlic clove
1/3 cup vinegar
1 1/2 cups tomato juice
1 cup water
2 teaspoons soya sauce
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450°F.
  • Cut ribs in 3 inch lengths, 3 ribs wide.
  • Place on rack in shallow roaster.
  • Roast 30-35 minutes until brown on each side.
  • Pour off fat.
  • Combine remaining ingredients in small saucepan.
  • Simmer 10 minutes until thickened.
  • Reduce oven heat to 350°F.
  • Remove rack from roasting pan.
  • Pour sauce over ribs and cover pan.
  • Bake 1 1/2 hours or until tender.

1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, undrained
2 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 green bell peppers, sliced
1 onion, chopped
½ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup cider vinegar
¼ cup tomato paste
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, minced

Steps:

  • Place ribs in slow cooker.
  • Mix pineapple with juice, tomato sauce, green bell pepper, onion, brown sugar, cider vinegar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic together in a bowl; pour over the ribs.
  • Cook on Low until ribs are cooked through and tender, 8 to 10 hours.

6 pounds pork spareribs or pork baby back ribs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup ketchup
2/3 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Place ribs on a rack in a large shallow roasting pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1-1/2 hours. , Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, ketchup, vinegar and water until smooth. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Remove ribs and rack from pan. Drain and discard fat. Return ribs to roasting pan; drizzle 1-1/2 cups sauce over ribs. Bake 30 minutes longer.
