This sounds strange - in German it's even stranger, it's just "peat" (Torf). But I thought nobody would like the sound of that, so I added the "sweet". In fact this is a recipe which I got from a Thuringian lady who told me this was a traditional christmas treat in her family. Whether it's originally Thuringian I don't know; I only found a swiss variety of it called "chocolate peat" (Schoggi Torf). It reminds me of brownies but differs from them in that it's only made with chocolate, not with cocoa powder. It's very dense and rich and tastes fantastic, and I'm really curious what the calculation will tell us about the energy... So, the patient information leaflet says that you have to cut it into SMALL cubes, much smaller than brownies, in order not to overdose it. For risks and side effects DON'T ask your doctor! Servings are a guess - I actually never counted how many cubes I got.

500 g baking chocolate
4 tablespoons water
200 g sugar
6 eggs, divided
150 g butter
250 g flour
1 pinch salt
1 dash baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Melt chocolate with water, set aside.
  • Beat egg whites until stiff.
  • Cream together sugar, egg yolks and butter.
  • Cream in molten chocolate.
  • Stir in flour, salt and baking powder.
  • Fold in stiff egg whites.
  • Pour into greased 9x13'' pan.
  • Bake about 25-30 minutes, cut into small cubes while warm.
  • Store in airtight container after completely cooled.
  • Store in cool place - as they're very moist you can't keep them too long.
  • Well, you won't be able to store them long anyway --
  • Fix a post-it on the lid with the emergency number - just in case.
  • Enjoy!

This is a recipe of my great-great grandmother's. It is wonderfully sweet and fresh. It's so delicious, it never lasts long!

4 fresh pears
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Peel and slice pears thin. Mix sliced pears with white sugar, brown sugar, and nuts and let sit for one hour. After sitting puree pear mixture in a blender.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 13x9 inch pan.
  • By hand stir in until just blended; the flour, salt, and baking soda. Add dry ingredients to pear mixture and add oil, vanilla and eggs. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

24 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
1 cup unsalted dry roasted peanuts

Steps:

  • Coat a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Place the caramels in a bowl, and heat in the microwave for about 2 minutes, or until melted and bubbly. Some microwaves may take longer. Stir in the peanuts, and pour out onto the prepared baking sheet. Press as thinly as you can. Cool completely, then break into pieces.
