Sweet 'n' Tangy Poppy Seed Dressing image

I like to serve this tangy dressing over fruit but have found it also adds a subtle sweet flavor to salad greens and chicken.

Number Of Ingredients 7

3/4 cup olive oil
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender; process for 30 seconds. Chill. Stir before using.

1 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup white vinegar
2 1/2 pounds cabbage, shredded
2 cups finely chopped celery
3 medium carrots, shredded
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
2/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon mustard seed
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Essence, recipe follows
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan combine the sugar and vinegar and heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Set aside to cool completely before proceeding.
  • Assemble remaining ingredients in a large, non-reactive mixing bowl and pour cooled sugar-vinegar mixture over all. Toss well to combine, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight before serving.
  • When ready to serve, season with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and Essence, to taste, and toss thoroughly to combine.
  • Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

½ cup chopped red onion
½ cup raisins
1 cup mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Place the bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate; crumble bacon.
  • Place broccoli, onion, raisins, and bacon in a large bowl.
  • Stir mayonnaise, sugar, and vinegar together in a bowl; pour dressing over broccoli mixture and toss to coat. Season with salt and black pepper.

2 cups elbow macaroni
2 ripe tomatoes, chopped
½ green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
¼ cucumber, chopped
1 green onion, chopped
⅔ cup white sugar
½ cup vegetable oil
⅓ cup ketchup
¼ cup vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook elbow macaroni in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 minutes. Drain and rinse in cold water until macaroni is cooled.
  • Place macaroni into a large salad bowl and stir in tomatoes, green bell pepper, cucumber, and green onion.
  • Whisk sugar, vegetable oil, ketchup, vinegar, salt, paprika, and black pepper, stirring in a bowl until sugar has dissolved. Pour dressing over macaroni and vegetables and toss to coat.

Nancy reported that this salad dressing recipe is originally from "Lancaster Entertains", a cookbook published by the Lancaster Medical Society Auxiliary-at least 50 years ago! It is credited to Evelyn Jones, a friend of Nancy's mother. Nancy keeps a jar in her fridge, using it as her go-to salad dressing. I find it well suited for a basic spinach and strawberry salad and almost anything with fruit, nuts, and cheese. Moreover, the slight sweetness perfectly balances bitter greens and vegetables such as radishes.

Number Of Ingredients 7

3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup vinegar (I use apple cider vinegar; plain white vinegar may be used)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 cup salad oil (olive, avocado, grapeseed, and canola oil, all work well)

Steps:

  • Mix all the ingredients in blender until thick and well blended, about a minute. Store in the refrigerator.
