ASIAN SWEET CHILI CHICKEN

Asian Sweet Chili Chicken image

Asian Sweet Chili Chicken is so crispy, sticky, sweet, slightly spicy and completely addicting you won't even miss your favorite Asian takeout.

Provided by Sabrina Snyder

Categories     Main Course

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 egg whites
1 cup all-purpose flour (sifted)
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup water (ice cold)
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 pound chicken thighs (boneless-skinless and cut into 1 inch pieces)
canola oil for frying
1 tablespoon oil
3 cloves garlic (minced)
3 green onions (sliced thinly, tip to tail not including the root)
1/2 cup Thai sweet chili sauce
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
white sesame seeds
minced green onions

Steps:

  • Mix together the batter ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Heat a frying pan up with oil deep enough to fry your chicken pieces without them touching the bottom of the pan, a couple inches should be enough space.
  • Using a slotted spoon drain the batter as much as possible and slide the chicken into the pan.
  • Break apart the chicken after the crust starts to form and cook until the chicken is golden brown (4-5 minutes)
  • Work in batches to prevent the oil from dropping too far in temperature.
  • Remove the last batch of chicken from the pan and discard almost all the oil, leaving just a couple of tablespoons in the pan.
  • Add the garlic and green onions to the pan and cook it on medium heat for 20-30 seconds.
  • Add the chicken back in along with the sweet chili sauce and crushed red pepper.
  • Toss to combine and serve immediately.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions if desired.

SWEET CHILI CHICKEN

Sweet Chili Chicken image

The "chili" in this recipe comes from Thai sweet chili sauce and it gives this dish both sweetness and a very slight touch of heat. When I make this for my family I omit the spinach and cilantro, and I often substitute a sweet onion for the green onions. Easily doubled. Adapted from Bonnie Stern.

Provided by Joanna Cismaru

Categories     Dinner     Lunch     Main Course

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 14

½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup cornstarch
½ teaspoon salt
1 pound chicken breast (boneless and skinless, cut into long strips, 1-inch wide)
vegetable oil (for frying)
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon butter
2 cloves garlic (minced)
2 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon lime juice (freshly squeezed)
4 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
2 tablespoon honey
2 green onions (sliced)
1 red chili (sliced)

Steps:

  • Prep the chicken: In a large shallow plate, combine the flour, cornstarch and salt together. Dredge the chicken through the flour mixture and set aside.
  • Fry the chicken: To a large skillet, add about ½ to ¾ inch of oil and heat it until it's at 350°F. Add the chicken to the skillet, make sure the pieces don't touch each other and fry on both sides until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer the cooked chicken to a paper towel lined plate and repeat with remaining chicken pieces.
  • Make the sauce: Discard all the oil from the skillet and add the sesame oil and butter and heat until the butter has melted. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until aromatic on low heat. Add the remaining sauce ingredients to the skillet, stir and cook for 1 minute.
  • Toss the chicken with the sauce: Transfer all the chicken to the skillet, toss well so the chicken is well coated and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes over low heat or until the chicken is heated through.
  • Garnish and serve: Garnish with green onions and red chilies and serve.

ASIAN SWEET CHILI SESAME CHICKEN

Asian Sweet Chili Sesame Chicken image

Provided by Jen

Categories     Main Course

Time 4h5m

Number Of Ingredients 18

2 pounds chicken breasts ((thawed)*)
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water
sriracha to taste ((optional))
2-4 tablespoons Asian sweet chili sauce ((I use Mae Ploy)**)
1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce
1/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons quality hoisin sauce ((like Lee Kum Kee or Kikkkoman)***)
2 tablespoons rice wine
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder (or 3-4 garlic cloves minced)
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon ginger powder (or 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger)
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
toasted sesame seeds
chopped green onions

Steps:

  • Add chicken to the bottom of your crockpot.
  • Whisk the Sweet Chili Sesame Sauce ingredients together in a medium bowl. Pour over chicken.
  • Cook on low for 5-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours OR until the chicken is tender enough to shred.
  • Shred chicken in the crockpot and add 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 1/4 cup water to the crockpot. Stir contents around. Cook on high for 20-30 minutes until sauce thickens. Taste and add Sriracha for spicier, brown sugar for sweeter if desired. *Alternatively, you can add the cornstarch slurry and liquid from the crockpot to a saucepan and simmer until thickened on the stove - this will create a thicker sauce.*
  • Serve with rice and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

SWEET CHILI CHICKEN SALAD

Sweet Chili Chicken Salad image

Time 58m

Yield 4 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 17

4 (6 to 8 oz.) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/3 cup Thai-style sweet chili sauce, plus some for drizzling (see Note)
4 Tbsp. fresh lime juice (divided)
1/2 (400 gram pkg.) dry Chinese-style egg noodles (see Note)
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. sesame oil
1 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 tsp. granulated sugar
1 garlic clove, chopped
2 tsp. freshly grated ginger
1 cup grated carrot
2 green onions, thinly sliced
1 small yellow or red bell pepper, halved, seeded and thinly sliced
2 cups beans sprouts
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup roasted, unsalted peanuts, coarsely chopped (optional)
Cilantro sprigs and lime wedges, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Set chicken on a parchment paper-lined baking pan. Combine the 1/3 cup sweet chili sauce and 2 Tbsp. of the lime juice in a small bowl; pour over the chicken. Bake chicken 25 minutes, basting occasionally, or until cooked through. Cool the chicken to room temperature, and then refrigerate until needed below. Cook the noodles in boiling water until just tender, about 2 to 3 minutes, and then drain well. Submerge the noodles in cold water to cool, and then drain well again. Place the vegetable oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, garlic, ginger and remaining lime juice in a large bowl. Add the noodles, carrot, green onion, bell pepper, bean spouts and chopped cilantro and toss to combine. Divide the noodles among four shallow bowls. Slice the chicken and arrange one breast on top of each salad, drizzling it with any sauce remaining in the baking pan. Top and garnish salads with cilantro springs, lime wedges and chopped peanuts, if using. Serve with salads with additional Thai-style sweet chili sauce, if desired. Note: Thai-style sweet chili sauce and Chinese-style egg noodles are available in our Asian foods aisle. Diamond brand noodles were used when testing this recipe. Recipe Options: Use rice noodles instead egg noodles. Replace some of the vegetables called for with others that appeal, such as chilled, blanched snow peas, sliced Napa cabbage, or grated English cucumber. Instead of chicken breast, roast and glaze a 1 1/4 lb. piece of pork tenderloin with the sweet chili sauce mixture. Cooking time, at the same temperature called for, for the chicken, will be about 30 minutes. Once chilled, thinly slice and divide and arrange the pork on top of the noodles.
