Ingredients

3 fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon minced fresh basil
3/4 to 1 cup ice cubes
2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce club soda
1 teaspoon simple syrup
1 teaspoon cranberry juice
Pinch pepper

Steps:

In a shaker, muddle strawberries and basil. Fill shaker three-fourths full with ice. Add the remaining ingredients; cover and shake 10-15 seconds or until condensation forms on outside of shaker. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Place strawberries and 2 cups water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a medium simmer for 20 minutes, until the berries have lost most of their color. Skim off foam that rises to the top, otherwise your syrup will be cloudy. This is a bit tedious, but it’s the only tedious thing about this recipe, and it’s totally worth it to make a drink that your friends will be raving about for weeks, so suck it up.
Strain the strawberries into another clean pan. Do not press down on the strawberries – this will also make your syrup cloudy. Place pan with strawberry liquid over medium-high heat, add 1/2 cup sugar and stir to dissolve.
Add 2 cups basil and 1 tbsp black peppercorns and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and strain into a jar or other storage container to cool. Store in the fridge. Syrup will keep in the fridge for a few weeks.
