Steps:
- 1. Preheat oven to 425F. In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add milk; stir until blended. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface. Add a little bit of green gel food coloring paste and knead lightly until the color is marbled through - 8 to 10 times. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a floured cutter.
- 2. Bake on an ungreased baking sheet for 10 - 12 minutes.

Steps:
- Steam vegetables until tender (15 minutes) and then arrange vegetables and apples around the edge of a large platter.
- Meanwhile prepare fondue; toss cheese and flour into a large bowl.
- Bring the stout, apple juice and mustard to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat. Gradually add cheese mixture to pan; stirring constantly until cheese is melted and smooth (you may need to thin with some additional stout). Season with salt and pepper, if desired.
- Transfer fondue to bowl or fondue pot and place in center of platter with vegetables.

- In a microwave safe bowl, melt butter and shortening. Add the sugar and melted butter mixture to a mixing bowl; mix well. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the anise extract. Add the dry ingredients and mix just until blended. If the dough is too sticky to roll in the palm of your hand, add flour until firmer, but it should be very soft.
- Roll dough in small balls (these tend to really puff up with all the baking powder in them!) and place on ungreased cookie sheets.

- Put all dry ingredients thru salt into a small to medium size bowl. If you are using orange zest, thyme, or caraway seeds, add them as well. Whisk it all until combined.
- Shred the butter as if shredding cheddar cheese and put it directly into the flour mixture. Use your hands or a pastry blender to mix it in. You should see it clump up a bit. It's not much butter so you will not see all the flour dissolve into little peas of butter - there will be plenty of loose flour still visible.
