I've been making this recipe for more than 20 years. My husband and I are in the wine and spirit business and we served it at one of our first dinner parties after we were married. It's a refreshing change from traditional red sangria. -Ellen Folkman, Crystal Beach, Florida

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 medium oranges, seeded and sliced
1 medium lemon, seeded and sliced
1 medium lime, seeded and sliced
2/3 cup brandy
1/2 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
2 bottles (750 milliliters each) white wine
1 bottle (1 liter) club soda, chilled

Steps:

  • Combine first 7 ingredients in a large pitcher. Refrigerate, covered, stirring occasionally, about 4 hours. Discard cinnamon sticks. Refrigerate, covered, 2 hours longer. Just before serving, stir in chilled club soda. Serve over ice with fruit slices in each glass.

1 tablespoon Spicy Salt, recipe follows
3 ounces tequila
2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
1 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
1/2 to 1 teaspoon orange liqueur
1/4 cup kosher salt
Finely grated zest of one lime
1/4 teaspoon ancho chile powder
1/4 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
Combine the salt, lime zest, ancho chile powder and chipotle chile powder in a small bowl.
1 cup sugar
Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. (Alternatively, heat in the microwave.) Let cool. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Steps:

  • Put the Spicy Salt on a plate. Dip the rim of a chilled margarita glass into the mixture to coat the edge. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, lime juice, Simple Syrup and orange liqueur. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.) Strain the margarita into the prepared glass.

3 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
10 whole allspice
10 whole cloves
6 cups apricot nectar
1 cup water
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 cups ginger beer, chilled
1 large apple, cubed
1 large pear, cubed
1 medium orange, sliced
1 medium lemon, sliced
Fresh mint leaves, optional

Steps:

  • Place the cinnamon, allspice and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with string to form a bag., Place the apricot nectar, water, lemon juice and spice bag in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from the heat; cover and steep for 5 minutes. Transfer to a pitcher. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours. Discard spice bag., Just before serving, add the ginger beer, fruits and, if desired, mint leaves.

2 cups water
1 cup sugar
4 star anise pods
1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
Two 3-inch cinnamon sticks
1-inch slice of fresh ginger
SANGRIA
One 750-ml bottle dry red wine, such as Grenache, Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup light rum
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 cup Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 1/2 cups club soda
2 navel oranges-peeled, halved, seeded and cut into large dice
1 lime-peeled, halved, seeded and cut into large dice
1 Granny Smith apple-halved, cored and cut into large dice
1 Bartlett pear-halved, cored and cut into large dice
Ice cubes

Steps:

  • MAKE THE SUGAR SYRUP In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, star anise, peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon sticks and ginger. Bring to a simmer over moderately high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Boil until reduced by one third and slightly syrupy, about 15 minutes. Let the spice syrup cool, then strain into a glass jar. MAKE THE SANGRIA Pour the red wine into a 3-quart pitcher. Stir in the orange juice, rum, brandy, Cointreau, club soda and 1/4 cup of the spice syrup; add more syrup if you prefer a sweeter sangria. Add the diced oranges, lime, apple and pear and refrigerate overnight. Serve the sangria in tall glasses over ice. Garnish with a tablespoon of the diced fruit. MAKE AHEAD The sangria can be refrigerated for up to 4 days. The spice syrup can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
Ice
2 quarts (64 ounces) pineapple juice
1 quart (32 ounces) mango nectar
2 750 milliliter bottles dry white wine such as Sauvignon Blanc
2 quarts seltzer
Ice

Steps:

  • In a heavy medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, vanilla pod and ginger. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook 10 minutes. Turn off heat and let sit 30 minutes to infuse. Strain into large bowl. Add wine and fruit juices and stir well. Serve in pitchers over lots of ice.
