This is a old family cookie recipe; after many years, I have yet to find another one as good. I've served these at family gatherings and of course it's my Christmas cut-out cookie recipe. I gave these as gifts to overnight guests when my daughter got married, and also as Valentine's Day presents. At family gatherings, everyone asks for them! -Teresa Broullire, Niagara, Wisconsin

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
GLAZE:
4 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup lemon juice
Food coloring

Steps:

  • Cream butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and extracts. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and cream of tartar; gradually beat into creamed mixture., Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm enough to roll., Preheat oven to 375°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-in. puzzle piece-shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets, interlocking cookies together in pairs., Bake until edges are light brown, 7-9 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely., For glaze, mix confectioners' sugar, corn syrup and lemon juice until smooth. Set aside 1/2 cup glaze for piping initials. Spread remaining glaze over cookies. Let stand at room temperature until glaze is set, about 1 hour. , Cut a small hole in the tip of a pastry bag or in a corner of a food-safe plastic bag; insert #2 round pastry tip. Tint reserved glaze as desired; add to pastry bag. Pipe initials on cookies. Let stand until set.,

1 cup (250 ml) sugar
3/4 cup (175 ml) butter, softened
1 egg
3 Tbsp. (50ml) whipping cream
1 tsp. (5 ml) vanilla
3 cups. (750 ml) all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. (7 ml) baking powder
granulated sugar
decorator frosting

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup (250 ml) sugar, the butter, egg, whipping cream and vanilla. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add flour and baking powder. Beat at low speed until soft dough forms. Cover with plastic wrap. Chill 1 to 2 hours or until firm. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. On floured surface, roll dough to 1/4" (5 mm) thickness. Using 3" (8 cm) cookie cutters, cut desired shapes into dough. Place shapes 2" (5 cm) apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle shapes with sugar. Bake for 4 to 6 minutes, or until edges are light golden brown. Prepare frosting. Decorate cookies as desired. Let dry completely before storing.

2¾ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, (room temperature)
¾ cup granulated sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon corn syrup
2 eggs
1½ cups caramel bits
1½ cups walnuts, (chopped)
½ cup pretzels, (chopped)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375° and prepare a baking sheet by lining with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, or a stand mixer, cream butter and the sugars together. Add in the vanilla, corn syrup, and eggs. Beat until just combined.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.
  • Fold in the caramel bits, chopped walnuts, and chopped pretzels.
  • Roll cookie dough into 1 inch balls and place them on your prepared baking sheet. Press dough balls slightly and add additional toppings into the dough.
  • Bake for 9-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly browned.
  • Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
