SOUL FOOD TURNIP GREENS
Steps:
- Melt butter in a large stock pot.
- Add onions and red peppers.
- Cook until tender and then add garlic.
- Cook garlic until fragrant and golden.
- Stir in chicken broth, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, and diced smoked turkey.
- Taste broth and season with salt & black pepper. Broth should taste very well seasoned and delicious.
- Let broth simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add turnips greens to pot and allow them to cook down slightly.
- Stir, cover and simmer for 1 hour (stirring occasionally)
- Remove lid and taste to adjust seasonings again. (I usually add a bit more salt, black pepper and hot sauce)
- Stir in baking soda and liquid smoke. (this will help further lessen the bitterness)
- Cover and simmer for an additional 10- 20 minutes or until greens are tender to your liking.
- Serve hot.
EASY TURNIP GREEN SOUP
I think tunips greens is a very southern veggie and I for one love em! This soup will take the chill off on a cold day and is perfect for bringing in the New Year. Can't start the year without greens and blackeyed peas! Hope you enjoy!

- 1. Place everything in a soup pot except for the peas and potatoes.
- 2. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, and cook for 20 minutes.

SOUTHERN TURNIP GREENS
Learn how to cook turnip greens just like they do in the South. Greens are slowly simmered with pork jowl, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper for a tender, tasty soul food side dish.

Steps:
- Remove the center stems from the greens. Discard the stems and coarsely chop the leaves.
- Heat the pork jowls in a large stock pot over medium heat. Cook for 3-5 minutes to render off some of the grease, but so not drain the grease.
- Add one quart (4 cups) of water to the pot. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add the cider vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper to the pot. Bring the pot to a boil again.
- Add the greens. You may need to work in batches, allowing the greens to wilt down to make room for more.
- Reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot again, then cook for 1 -2 hours. The longer the greens cook, the more tender they will become.
- Season the greens with salt and pepper if needed.

This recipe was given to me by my aunt. I've never heard of it before but it is really good. A mixture of turnip greens, northern beans, kielbasa sausage, and seasonings. Great served with cornbread.

- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir kielbasa and onion in the hot oil until the onion is tender, 5 to 7 minutes; set aside.

TURNIP GREEN SOUP
A truly easy, healthy, delicious and satisfying Southern style soup. Make it for New Year's lunch and substitute black eyed peas for the northern beans and you have the perfect good luck meal..all of you Southerners know what I mean. Cooking time is approximate, the doneness of the greens determines when it's dinner time. I like it to cook a little over 30 minutes, some might prefer it to cook longer, don't cook it to death though. The turkey sausage will become dry. Serve with corn bread (made in a cast iron skillet...It's dinner time y'all!)

- Separate the turnips and the turnip greens; set the greens aside. Cut the turnips into 1/2-inch pieces and transfer to a medium bowl.
