This Creamy Coleslaw Dressing Recipe is the classic southern style that you can easily make with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. It's sweet, creamy, tangy and crunchy, just like a good southern coleslaw should be.

1 cup light mayonnaise
1/2 cup white sugar
3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp celery salt
1/4 tsp poppy seeds
1 16oz bag shredded cabbage

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl whisk together mayo, vinegar, and sugar. Whisk in spices and poppy seeds until everything is well combined.
  • To make coleslaw, add this to a 16oz bag of pre-cut cabbage or coleslaw mix.

1 medium head green cabbage (about 2-3 lbs) (cored and chopped)
1 medium carrot (chopped)
3 medium green onions (chopped)
1 cup real mayonnaise
1/3 cup granulated sugar ((Or, equivalent of sugar free sweetener))
1/3 cup buttermilk
3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp celery seeds
1/2 tsp lemon pepper ((may use black pepper and fresh lemon juice))
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp granulated garlic or garlic powder
1/4 tsp ground mustard

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, toss together cabbage, carrot and green onion.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sugar, buttermilk, vinegar, salt, celery seeds, lemon pepper, onion powder, garlic and mustard.
  • Pour dressing over cabbage, mix until fully blended.
  • Chill in an airtight container for at least 6 hours prior to serving garnished with green onion and additional celery seeds, if desired.

Just an old family recipe that I have been told is reminiscent of KFC coleslaw. You be the judge! To speed things up I sometimes just buy an already shredded bag of cabbage with carrots in it and then just chop it a little finer.

1 head cabbage, finely shredded
2 carrots, finely chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
½ cup mayonnaise
⅓ cup white sugar
¼ cup milk
¼ cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Mix cabbage, carrots, and onion in a large salad bowl. Whisk mayonnaise, sugar, milk, buttermilk, lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and black pepper in a separate bowl until smooth and the sugar has dissolved.
  • Pour dressing over cabbage mixture and mix thoroughly. Cover bowl and refrigerate slaw at least 2 hours (the longer the better). Mix again before serving.

This slaw is a nice change from those with mayo. It's also quite easy and great for this hot weather. Found in the local paper. Prep time does not include chilling time.

1 head cabbage (about 5 lbs)
1 large yellow onion (for 1 cup chopped)
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup sugar
6 ounces low-sodium V8 juice
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon celery seed

Steps:

  • Wash and remove the outer leaves of the cabbage. Cut the cabbage into eighths and remove the core. Set aside.
  • Peel the onion and cut into eighths. Using a food processor fitted with the steel blade attachment, process the cabbage and onion, in manageable batches, until chopped finely. Scrape into a large container with a tight fitting lid. Set aside.
  • In a 1 quart or larger saucepan, combine the vinegar, sugar, V08, salt and celery seed. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar is melted.
  • Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the cabbage and toss to coat well. Cover and refrigerate until completely chilled, at least 4 hours.
