SOUTHERN BARBECUE SHRIMP

I adapted this recipe from one I found in Gourmet Magazine grilling issue. I added a bit more brown sugar to the sauce to take some of the bite out of the Worcestershire. The original recipe called for the shrimp to be broiled in their shells. Today happened to be in the high 90's, so I decided to cook these, peeled, in the sauce over the stove...ANYTHING to not have to turn the broiler on!! I think they turned out great. Next time I think I will definitely try these on the grill.

1 lb large shrimp, shelled and deveined
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons Old Bay Seasoning (or other seafood seasoning)
lemon wedge

Steps:

  • In a sauce pan over low heat, melt butter, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, and Old Bay seasoning.
  • Whisk until brown sugar is dissolved.
  • Add about 1/2 the sauce to a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add shrimp and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until shrimp turn pink and are cooked through.
  • as the shrimp were finishing, I turned the heat up a bit under the remaining sauce until it just bubbled a bit.
  • Transfer cooked shrimp to platter and serve with lemon wedges, and remaining sauce.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound uncooked large shrimp, deveined but with tails and shells intact
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons (packed) golden brown sugar
2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning or other seafood seasoning
Lemon wedges
Crusty baguette slices

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler. Cover rimmed baking sheet with foil and spread shrimp on sheet. Mix melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, and Old Bay seasoning in medium bowl for sauce. Pour half of sauce over shrimp and stir to coat. Broil until shrimp are just opaque in center, about 2 1/2 minutes per side. Transfer to platter; serve with lemon wedges, baguette slices, and remaining sauce.

4 lbs fresh unpeeled large shrimp (6 pounds if using shrimp with heads on)
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup chili sauce
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 lemons, sliced
4 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons creole seasoning
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
French bread

Steps:

  • Spread shrimp in a shallow, aluminum foil-lined broiler pan.
  • Combine butter and next 12 ingredients in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until butter melts, and pour over shrimp.
  • Cover and chill 2 hours, turning shrimp every 30 minutes.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 400° for 20 minutes; turn once.
  • Serve with bread.

Very easy and one of my favorite shrimp recipes. Makes enough for 2 moderate appetites. My husband could eat the entire thing by himself, so servings depend on your cooking audience. The recipe refers to this as an appetizer, but that just seems downright silly to me. Make sure you serve this with hot bread to soak up the sauce.

1 1/4 lbs fresh jumbo shrimp, unpeeled
1/2 cup unsalted butter, sliced
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon creole seasoning (I use Tony Chachere's)
1 tablespoon fresh coarse ground black pepper
1 lemon, cut into 4 wedges
hot French bread

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients to an oven-proof skillet; stir to combine.
  • Bake at 450° for 10 minutes or until shrimp turn pink.
  • Serve shrimp with hot French bread, cold beer or iced tea, and lots of napkins.
