CLASSIC WHISKEY SOUR



Classic Whiskey Sour image

The most famous of sour cocktails: the whiskey sour! It's perfectly balanced with bourbon, lemon and sweetener. Garnish with an orange peel and a cocktail cherry.

2 ounces (4 tablespoons) bourbon whiskey*
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce (1 1/2 tablespoons) pure maple syrup (or simple syrup)
Garnish: Orange peel and a cocktail cherry
Ice, for serving
Variation: Add an egg white for a Boston Sour

Steps:

  • Add the bourbon whiskey, lemon juice, and syrup to a cocktail shaker. Fill with a handful of ice and shake until very cold.
  • Strain the drink into a lowball or Old Fashioned glass. Serve with ice, an orange peel and a cocktail cherry.

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
3/4 cup lemon juice
3/4 cup lime juice

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until sugar is dissolved, 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature., Transfer to a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add lemon and lime juices. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

1 cup (8 ounces) water
1 cup (8 ounces) freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup (4 ounces) freshly squeezed lime juice

Steps:

  • Make simple syrup by bringing the sugar and water to a boil and stirring to dissolve sugar, about 7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • While syrup is cooling, strain freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice into a resealable bottle, discarding the pulp. Pour in the cooled simple syrup. Shake and use immediately or refrigerate.
