Tried for years to duplicate my nana's recipe. I was a bit skeptical about the lemon extract but it is what it needed!

2 ¾ cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup butter
2 eggs
½ cup sour cream
½ teaspoon lemon extract
1 tablespoon white sugar
¼ cup chopped walnuts, or to taste
¼ cup raisins, or to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease baking sheets.
  • Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg together into a bowl.
  • Beat 1 1/2 cups sugar and butter together in a bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition; blend in sour cream and lemon extract. Gradually stir flour mixture into creamed butter mixture until dough is combined.
  • Drop dough by rounded tablespoons, about 3 inches apart, onto the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown around the edges, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar over cookies; top with walnuts and raisins. Continue baking until bottoms of cookies begin to brown, 3 to 4 minutes more. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

2/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/3 cup sour cream
1/8 teaspoon lemon extract
1-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Colored sugar or sprinkles, optional

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, sour cream and extract. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and nutmeg; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well., Divide dough in half. Shape one half into a 5-in.-long roll. Wrap in plastic; place in a resealable plastic freezer bag. May be frozen for up to 3 months. Cover and refrigerate remaining dough for 1 hour or until easy to handle., On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles if desired., Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Cool for 1 minute before removing to a wire rack to cool completely., To use frozen cookie dough: Remove dough from the freezer 1 hour before baking. Unwrap and cut into 12 slices. Steps:

These Sour Cream Sugar Cookies are soft and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness -- they're perfect with or without frosting and make a great freezer-friendly holiday cookie!

1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cups granulated sugar ((400g))
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup sour cream
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 teaspoons baking powder
4 cups all purpose flour, fluffed and levelled ((500g))
1/2 cup butter
2 1/2 cups powdered icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons milk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar on high until creamy.
  • Add eggs, vanilla, and sour cream and beat until smooth.
  • Add baking soda, baking powder and flour and beat on low until combined -- dough will be soft, almost like cake batter. THIS IS FINE.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto baking sheets 2-3 inches apart and bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden and centers are set.
  • FrostingWith an electric mixer, beat butter until smooth. Add sugar, vanilla and milk and beat until smooth, adding additional sugar or milk to reach desired consistency (you don't want it too thin!).
  • Color if desired and spread on cooled cookies.

½ cup lard
1 ½ cups white sugar
2 eggs
3 tablespoons sour cream
½ teaspoon baking soda
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cream butter, lard and sugar. Add eggs and beat. Mix sour cream and baking soda together and add to egg mixture. Add flour and salt and mix well.
  • Chill dough until firm enough to roll.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C).
  • Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutter. It's wise to keep dough in refrigerator between rolling out batches. Bake for 5 - 7 minutes.

Another recipe from Karen Bennion in the late 70's. Very excellent. This recipe makes a large batch of cookies. (She may have given it to me "doubled"). But the cookies are excellent. The recipe can be halved but just use two eggs instead of three if halving.

1 c butter
2 c sugar
3 well beaten eggs
1 c sour cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
5 c sifted flour
1 tsp salt
FROSTING
1/2 stick butter
1 c powdered sugar (or to consistency)
pinch salt
1 or 2 tsp canned milk (or to consistency)
1 tsp vanilla

Steps:

  • 1. Make cookies, you know how -- those were her instructions LOL
  • 2. Cream the butter and sugar, add the three well beaten eggs, then the sour cream and vanilla
  • 3. Sift the dry ingredients and add to the wet mixture
  • 4. Mix all together and drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet bake 350 for 10-12 min or until done
  • 5. After they have cooled, make the frosting and frost
  • 6. FROSTING: cream the butter and sugar, adding a tsp of vanilla and one or two tsp canned milk for consistency, don't forget the pinch of salt.

  • In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in the egg, sour cream and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Chill for at least 1 hour. , Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 425° for 7-8 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. , For frosting, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown; stir in confectioners' sugar, vanilla and enough water to reach a spreading consistency.
