Military S.O.S. Feasty Style image

Stand up straight! Suck in that gut! Straighten that chin! AAAH! The good ol' days! Come to think of it, that S.O.S. you use to eat back in the service wasn't all that bad, right? Let The Feasty Boys show you their variation of the very S.O.S. the U.S. Coast Guard is still talkin' about!!

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Pork

Time 30m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 teaspoons butter
1 (12 ounce) package maple flavored sausage
1 pound extra-lean ground beef
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
4 cups milk
2 teaspoons beef bouillon
6 slices white bread
3 sprigs fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and maple sausage, and cook until no longer pink. Gradually mix in flour, while stirring continuously, until the mixture is thick and pasty. You may not need all of the flour. Slowly whisk in the milk using a fork so that lumps do not form. Stir in bouillon. Continue cooking and stirring constantly until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. The longer it cooks, the thicker it will get.
  • Toast slices of white bread, and top with the meat gravy. Garnish with a little fresh parsley, and serve.

SOS - MILITARY STYLE

SOS - military style image

Growing up we had this often with a salad,or fresh cooked veggies (my fave with it was fresh peas)My mom used dried chipped beef. Considering the economy now compared to then lean ground beef is just as tasty. If you'd like you could use dried beef - about 6 - 8 ounces, no need to brown dried beef.

Provided by Kathleen Brigham

Categories     Beef

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 lb lean ground chuck
1 medium onion chopped
1 tsp canola oil
5 Tbsp flour
3 c whole milk
about 10 slices of toasted bread, or bisquits lightly buttered
salt / pepper to taste
1 tsp sugar

Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until meat is completely cooked. Sprinkle flour over top and stir into meat and onion mixture until totally absorbed. Slowly add milk, stirring constantly, until thickened. Taste and adjust salt and pepper. Serve over 2 slices of toast or biscuits;

HAMBURGER GRAVY (SOS) - ARMY STYLE - TRAVELING IN MY KITCHEN
2021-09-17 Back in WWII when SOS was named “SOS,” it was made by serving creamed chipped beef gravy over toast. The toast was the shingle and the gravy was the “you know what.”. People still call chipped beef gravy on toast, “SOS,” but when I was in the army we made it with ground beef gravy over biscuits. That was our SOS.

FOODS OF WAR: SH*T ON A SHINGLE - WAR ON THE ROCKS
2015-06-16 The original recipe from “Manual for Army Cooks,” 1910. As the recipe suggests, S.O.S. is less of a dish and more of a rubric: Make a sauce, add meat of some type, and serve over bread. In this light, the dish fits into the same culinary genre as the southern staple biscuits and gravy, or even the British classic beans on toast.
