Time 3h30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 large eggs plus 1 large egg yolk
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups milk
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 ounce mini chocolate chips, plus 8 mini chocolate chips for garnish
1/2 cup cold rum or brandy (optional)
1 dried apricot, cut into 4 wedges

Steps:

  • Whisk the eggs, egg yolk and sugar in a bowl until combined. Heat the milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat until steaming; do not boil. Remove from the heat. Whisk 1 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, then whisk the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon and a thermometer registers 165 degrees F, about 5 minutes. (Do not boil or the eggs will curdle.)
  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl and stir in the vanilla and nutmeg. Let cool at room temperature, about 1 hour. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours or up to 1 week.
  • Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl; microwave, stirring every 20 seconds, until just melted. Arrange four 8- to 10-ounce glasses (or lowball glasses) on a workspace. Using the tip of your pinky or a small paintbrush dipped in chocolate, paint 3 buttons and two arms on the inside of each glass.
  • If desired, stir rum into the chilled eggnog mixture. Divide the eggnog evenly among the glasses. Whisk the remaining 1 1/2 cups heavy cream in a large bowl until stiff peaks form. Fit a pastry bag with a large star tip, and fill the bag with whipped cream. Pipe a generous swirl of whipped cream on each glass of eggnog to make the snowmen's heads. Directly above each row of snowman buttons, place an apricot wedge into each whipped cream head to form a nose. Place two mini chips above each nose to form eyes. Serve immediately.

SNOWMAN BANANA NOG

Snowman Banana Nog image

This snowman decoration comes together in a few minutes and makes a sweet way to serve a winter mocktail. The creamy white nog is dazzled with the wintry flavors of nutmeg and allspice.

Time 20m

Yield 4 drinks

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 cups whole milk or oat milk
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar, plus more for sprinkling
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for sprinkling
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
4 bananas, sliced and frozen
Whipped cream, for topping

Steps:

  • Heat a hot-glue gun.
  • Glue 3 buttons down the front of 4 pint-size (16-ounce) mason jars. Cut 4 strips of red or green felt, each 1 1/4 inches by 18 inches. Snip fringe into the ends of the felt with scissors. Wrap a felt scarf around the neck of each jar.
  • Put the milk, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, allspice and banana in a blender and blend on high speed until the banana liquifies and the drink is thick and creamy. Pour into the decorated jars and mound whipped cream on top of each drink so it's taller than the rim. Grate more nutmeg on top. Insert a straw and sprinkle confectioners' sugar snow over everything.

MINTY SNOWMEN

Minty Snowmen image

Each year I choose a different decorating theme for my holiday kickoff party - last time it was snowmen and snowflakes. These cute little snowman mints were fun to make and drew lots of smiles. -Shelly Rynearson, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin

EGGNOG SNOWMAN COOKIES

Eggnog Snowman Cookies image

From "Denver Post." I love that's there's eggnog in the frosting, too. These travel well and are showy enough for gifts. Note: you can chill the dough in a log shape and slice and bake. If you omit the nutmeg these taste more like a sweet vanilla cookie.
