Spaghetti with sauce is my kids' favorite dinner, so through trial and error, I came up with my own recipe. This is the winning result. I love that it's made in a slow cooker.-Samantha Vicars, Kenosha, Wisconsin

1 pound bulk Italian sausage
1 medium onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 cup minced fresh basil, divided
Hot cooked pasta

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook sausage and onion over medium heat for 7-8 minutes or until sausage is no longer pink and onion is tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Drain. Transfer to a 3-qt. slow cooker., Stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, bay leaves, oregano, dried basil, salt and thyme. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours., Discard bay leaves; stir in half of the fresh basil. Serve with pasta. Top with remaining basil.

I used combinations from a lot of recipes over the years to come up with this. This is perfect for a weekend, when folks are staying close to the house. Once it's in the pot, it doesn't require a lot of attention, and it makes the house smell wonderful!

2 lbs hot Italian sausage
1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 orange bell pepper, chopped
6 garlic cloves, nicnced
2 onions, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
8 ounces sliced baby portabella mushrooms
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
3 beef bouillon cubes
3 bay leaves
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 1/2 tablespoons dried oregano
1/4 cup fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 cup beef broth
1 cup red wine

Steps:

  • In a large stockpot cook the sausage, yellow bell pepper, orange bell pepper, garlic, onion, and celery. Cook until sausage is no longer pink. Drain into a large colander to drain grease.
  • To the large saucepot, add the mushrooms, tomato sauce, tomatoes, tomato paste, bouillon cubes, bay leaves, thyme, oregano, basil, crushed red pepper, black pepper, sugar, and beef broth and stir well. Pour the meat mixture into the pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover. Simmer for 2 hours. Salt and pepper to taste to pull flavors together toward end of cooking time.
  • Serve with Spaghetti or favorite pasta.

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes, undrained
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
16 ounces uncooked spaghetti
Shredded fresh Parmesan cheese, if desired

Steps:

  • Cook beef and sausage in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until beef is brown and sausage is no longer pink, about 8 minutes; drain.
  • Mix beef mixture and remaining ingredients except spaghetti and Parmesan cheese in 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on low heat setting 8 to 10 hours.
  • About 20 minutes before serving, cook and drain spaghetti as directed on package. Serve sauce with hot cooked spaghetti and Parmesan cheese.

  • Increase the heat to medium high and add the red wine and scrape the bottom of the pan to remove all of the bits on the bottom, when most of the wine has cooked off add the jarred sauce and water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium low and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.
  • While the spaghetti sauce is simmering - cook the pasta - add directly to the sauce pan when done and finish by topping with a bit of parmesan cheese if desired.
  • Please note - if you are using additional add-ins - cook raw vegetables with the onions & mushrooms, during sautéing - if you are adding canned foods such as olives, sundries tomatoes or roasted red peppers, add them when you add the jarred sauce. Super simple & super good!
