SLOPPY JOE

Sloppy Joe image

I like my sloppy Joe recipe in easy-to-eat wraps, but the turkey and beef work in burger buns too

Provided by Jamie Oliver

Categories     Mains     Beef     American

Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 13

¾ pound quality lean ground beef (10% fat) or turkey
1 yellow onion, peeled and diced
1 green bell pepper, cored, seeded and diced
¾ cup tomato puree
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1½ tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
½ teaspoon chilli powder
½ can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
freshly ground pepper, to taste
4 whole wheat hamburger buns or whole wheat wraps
1 cup shredded lettuce

Steps:

  • Put a large sauté pan over a medium heat and crumble in the beef or turkey. Fry until the meat starts to brown then add the bell pepper and onion. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the veggies start to soften - this should take around 5 to 10 minutes.
  • When the veggies are tender, add the tomato purée and stir into the meat, then add the vinegar, brown sugar, honey, mustard and chile powder to the pan and give everything a really good stir. Add the beans, season with salt and pepper, then bring to a boil and cook until the sauce is nice and thick.
  • To serve: pile the Sloppy Joe mix onto the bottom of a bun or middle of a wrap, top it with lettuce and close up the sandwich or roll up the wrap.
  • Serving suggestions: Delicious served with an Everyday chopped green salad or some Brilliant broccoli.
  • Jamie's top tips • Look out for ground beef with around 10% fat - if buying turkey, try to buy the best quality you can afford. Don't buy poor-quality turkey mince. If your grocery store has a meat counter you can ask them to grind the meat for you. • This can be made completely ahead of time and reheated just before serving. If you're reheating Sloppy Joes, add water a little bit at a time to loosen. • If you want to give it a bit of a kick add some more chile powder or even a chopped fresh chile.
  • Tips from the dietitian: • Sloppy Joe is a real favorite, but for a healthier version, use lean ground turkey instead of beef - the leaner meat is better for the heart. • Rinsing beans removes some of the salt but you can also look for low-sodium or no-salt-added beans.

HOMEMADE SLOPPY JOES

Homemade Sloppy Joes image

Despite the name of this iconic retro dish, the secret to a great sloppy joe is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows the sandwich to be eaten with your hands. Serve on hamburger buns.

Provided by Chef John

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Sandwich Recipes     Sloppy Joe Recipes

Time 1h10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced
1 cup water
¾ cup ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup water
1 pinch cayenne pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place ground beef and onion in a large skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and stir the mixture constantly until the beef is browned and forms small crumbles, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic and green bell pepper; cook and stir until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping the pan to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  • Mix in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Add 1 more cup water and return mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick, about 40 minutes.
  • Season with salt , black pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste.

CRUNCHY SLOPPY JOE WRAPS

Crunchy Sloppy Joe Wraps image

Who said sloppy joes have to be so sloppy anyway? This twist on the nostalgic sandwich is piled into a large tortilla and topped with crunchy and salty corn chips. Everything gets covered with a creamy cheese blanket before it's folded up into a neat little packet.

Provided by Gabriela Rodiles

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 6 wraps

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/2 small onion, roughly chopped
1/2 small green or other color bell pepper, roughly chopped
4 tablespoons olive oil or neutral oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 ounces ground beef or ground turkey
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar or granulated sugar
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons yellow mustard, Dijon mustard or grainy mustard
Pinch cayenne or red pepper flakes
6 burrito-size tortillas
2 cups fried corn strips, such as Fritos, or crushed tortilla chips
1 cup finely shredded romaine or iceberg lettuce
6 slices Cheddar

Steps:

  • Pulse the onions and bell pepper in a mini food processor until very well chopped and almost pureed. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, peppers, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and some of the juice has evaporated, about 2 minutes. Add the beef or turkey and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon and stirring occasionally, until no longer pink, 5 to 6 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, stir the ketchup, sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, mustard and cayenne together in a medium bowl. Add to the skillet and stir to combine with the meat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is warmed and slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Lay one tortilla out on a work surface. Spoon 1/3 cup sloppy joe mix into the center of the tortilla and spread it out to a 4-inch circle. Top with 1/3 cup corn strips, a sprinkle of lettuce and then a slice of cheese. To close the wrap, start at the bottom of the tortilla and fold one edge up over the filling, folding just until you get to the center. Continue folding the edges toward the center, creating about 5 pleats and making sure all the filling is covered. Repeat with the remaining tortillas and fillings.
  • Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons oil in another large nonstick skillet over medium to medium-low heat and add 3 wraps, seam side down. Cook without turning them until they are golden brown, crispy and no long come apart when lifted, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook the other side until the tortillas are golden brown, about 2 minutes longer. Repeat with the remaining 3 wraps. Transfer to a platter and serve immediately.

SLOPPY JOE CRUNCH WRAPS

Sloppy Joe Crunch Wraps image

Classic sloppy Joes contain a good bit of sugar, but this turkey version goes more savory with just a touch of honey for balance. The turkey mixture gets wrapped up with cheese and pickles in tortilla wraps and toasted in a skillet for a warm, gooey handheld lunch or dinner modeled after a fast-food favorite. The wraps should be soft and pliable; if they're not, warm them in the microwave for a few seconds. When you fold the tortilla over the filling, it won't completely cover everything; a pre-toasted piece of tortilla nestles in to cover the opening and keep the whole crunch wrap enclosed.

Categories     Lunch,Dinner

Time 40m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

5 spray(s) Cooking spray
5 tortilla(s) Low carb, high fiber tortilla wrap(s) or similar product
1 pound(s) Uncooked 99% fat-free ground turkey breast
0.5 cup(s), chopped Uncooked onion(s) finely chopped
2 tsp Chili powder
0.5 tsp Table salt
0.25 tsp Black pepper
1 cup(s) Canned tomato sauce
1 Tbsp Honey
20 slice(s) Kosher dill pickle sandwich slice(s)
4 oz 50% reduced fat sharp cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Heat large nonstick skillet over medium-high. On cutting board, place 1 tortilla and spray both sides with nonstick spray. Cut tortilla into quarters. Arrange quarters in pan and cook until toasted and crisp, about 1 minute per side. Let cool to room temperature.
  • Heat same skillet over medium-high. Coat pan with nonstick spray. Add turkey, onion, chili powder, salt, and black pepper and cook, stirring to crumble meat, until turkey is cooked through and onion is tender, about 4 minutes. Add tomato sauce and honey and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  • Heat same skillet over medium. Place 1 tortilla on cutting board and spray top of tortilla with nonstick spray. Flip tortilla. Spoon ¾ cup turkey filling in center of tortilla, leaving 1½-inch border. Top with 5 pickle slices and 1 oz cheese. Place 1 toasted tortilla quarter on top. Carefully fold sides of tortilla over filling, creating pleats to cover tortilla quarter, and press gently on pleats. Carefully flip wrap over and place in heated skillet. Cook wrap, pressing with spatula, until crisp, about 2 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  • Serving size: 1 wrap

SLOPPY JOE PITAS

Sloppy Joe Pitas image

Yes, you can have vegan sloppy Joes! This saucy, plant-strong recipe features bulgur as the star ingredient, and it all comes together in just 30 minutes. Sloppy Joes are a lot easier to eat stuffed into a pita than piled on a traditional bun. Look for store-bought barbecue sauce that's oil-free, or make your own. From The Forks Over Knives Plan

Categories     Burgers & Wraps/">Burgers & Wraps

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup bulgur
1 cup finely chopped onion
½ cup finely chopped green bell pepper
½ cup finely chopped celery
2 cloves garlic, minced
1¾ cups oil-free barbecue sauce
1 Tbsp. reduced-sodium soy sauce or tamari
Sea salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
3 whole grain pita bread rounds

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan bring 2 cups water to boiling. Stir in bulgur. Return to boiling; remove from heat. Cover and let stand at least 15 minutes. Drain off any remaining liquid.
  • Meanwhile, in a large skillet cook onion, bell pepper, and celery over medium 7 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding additional water, 1 to 2 Tbsp. at a time, as needed to prevent sticking. Add garlic; cook 1 minute or until softened.
  • Stir in bulgur, barbecue sauce, and soy sauce. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook 10 minutes.
  • In a dry skillet heat pita rounds, one at a time, on both sides until warm. Cut in half crosswise and fill with bulgur mixture.
