MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

Monte Cristo Sandwich image

A great brunch item! One of my husbands favorite filling, baked, french toast style, sandwiches filled with cheese, ham, turkey & mustard. Raspberry preserves is a must for him. Could be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a LESSER FAT Monte Cristo recipe being baked and not fried full of flavor! I also like to buy the low salt cold cuts or use fresh baked turkey leftovers sliced thin.

MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

Monte Cristo Sandwich image

Provided by Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 43m

Yield 1 sandwich

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 slices white bread
Mayonnaise, as needed
2 slices Gouda
2 slices turkey
3 large eggs, beaten
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Strawberry slices, for garnish
Orange wedges, for garnish
Serving suggestion: Blackberry jam

Steps:

  • On a work surface, lay out 2 slices of bread and spread with mayonnaise. Top each slice with the 1 slice of Gouda and 1 slice of turkey each. Put the third slice of bread on top of one stack, and flip the remaining stack on top, cheese-side down, to make a triple-decker sandwich.
  • Using a knife, cut the crusts off the sandwich (this helps to pinch and seal the ends). Wrap the sandwich tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 6 hours. (Wrapping the sandwich in plastic wrap, compacts it, and prevents the egg batter from seeping in.)
  • Combine the eggs and milk in a bowl. Heat the oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Unwrap the sandwich and dip it in the egg batter, to coat evenly. Gently place it in the skillet, and fry, turning once, until golden brown and hot, about 5 minutes total.
  • Cut the Monte Cristo in 1/2, transfer it to a place, and garnish with the strawberry and orange. Spoon some jam over each 1/2 and serve immediately.

BEST MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

Best Monte Cristo Sandwich image

This is my one of my son's most requested recipes, though all my kids love it! We serve it with warmed, real maple syrup for dipping. We tried 4 or 5 recipes before combining a few to come up with this one, now nothing else will do!

Provided by Darcys Diner

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 30m

Yield 4 sandwiches, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

8 slices firm bread (we use pepperidge farm)
8 slices deli ham
8 slices deli turkey
4 slices American cheese (or you can use cheddar, my kids prefer american)
4 slices swiss cheese
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2/3 cup flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons honey dijon mustard
powdered sugar, garnish
maple syrup or jam, for dipping
oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Assemble four sandwiches using bread, meats, and cheeses. Set aside. In medium mixing bowl (I use a square casserole dish), combine egg, water, milk, salt, sugar, flour, baking powder & mustard. Beat well. Heat about 1" of oil in deep skillet (I use a large iron skillet). Dip your sandwiches into the coating mixture, I like to get them well soaked. They will be drippy -- try to drain off a bit, carefully slide into the hot oil. Repeat with remaining sandwiches. When nicely browned, gently flip over & brown other side. Remove to paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Let cool a few minutes before cutting so the cheese doesn't ooze out. Cut each sandwich into four fingers for easy dipping. Serve with syrup or jam.

Top with 1-2 slices of cheese (or enough to cover the surface of the bread in a single layer), followed by 2 slices of ham (1 slice if using thick sliced leftover ham); set aside.

  • Preheat a deep fryer to 350 degrees. Canola oil, peanut oil, or anything with a high smoke point works best.
  • Cut the bread, ham slices, and Swiss cheese into uniform squares that are all the same size. Stack the pieces of the sandwich neatly as follows: bread, cheese, ham, cheese, bread, cheese, ham, cheese, bread. Stacking the layers in this manner allows the cheese to help hold each layer together. Give the sandwich a slight press and set to chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  • Combine the bread flour, eggs, milk, salt, and baking powder in a bowl and vigorously whisk until a smooth batter forms. The use of bread flour and eggs will make sure that there’s enough protein content in the batter to create a barrier against the oil. This will make a crispy exterior, rather than an oil-soaked one.
  • Place the corn flakes into a bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Try to keep the pieces uniform—not too fine, not too coarse. The crushed corn flakes will adhere to the batter and add that perfect flaky crunch.
