SIMPLE LETTUCE SALAD
MY Mother often fixed this salad when I was a child. I grew up on a farm and most of our food came right from the garden. We especially liked this in the spring, when early leaf lettuce appeared. After a long winter of cooked vegetables, this was a real treat.

- Wash lettuce. Separate lettuce from the cluster. If the lettuce is from the garden, then you will need to soak it in salt water or use a drop of bleach to make sure it is properly clean.
- Cut lettuce. Cut the lettuce in whatever size you want, but preferable large cuts on a tray or bowl. Advertisement.
- Squeeze the lemons. If you are using lemon, then squeeze the lemons into a cup. If you are using vinegar, then pour a reasonable amount into a cup.
- Add sugar to the vinegar or lemon. The amount of sugar should be enough to have a thick syrup-like consistency. Mix it very well that the sugar crystals are not visible.
- Slice the tomatoes and onions and add them to your salad. This is optional. Advertisement.

- Simple Butter Lettuce Salad. In just five minutes, you’re going to have this super simple, low-calorie Butter Lettuce Salad to enjoy. Butterhead lettuce is my favorite which is why I put this recipe at the top of the list.
- Lettuce Salad with Tomato and Cucumber. This next salad, Lettuce with Tomato and Cucumber, is quite similar to my grandmother’s recipe for summertime get-togethers.
- Classic Waldorf Salad. Apples and walnuts in a salad? Count me in! This Classic Waldorf Salad is one of the few ways my mother will eat mayonnaise. However, if you’re not a big fan of this dressing, I’ve prepared this salad before with plain yogurt and a dash of pesto, as well as sour cream and some sugar.
- Lettuce Salad with Caper Vinaigrette. While similar to olives, capers do have a more acquired taste. If you’ve not had the chance to eat capers before, this Lettuce Salad with Caper Vinaigrette is a great and easy option to help you warm up to them.
- Shrimp Caesar Salad. This Shrimp Caesar Salad is a healthy recipe, perfect for those fond of Cajun cuisine. While the salad calls for romaine lettuce, I’ve added my favorite, butterhead, too, and it’s brought a juciness that goes well with the buttery tenderness of the shrimp.
- French Butter-Lettuce Salad. French Butter-Lettuce Salad; one of my favorite sides to pair with hearty dinners because of how light and refreshing it tastes!
- The Best Green Salad Recipe. This is quite a simple lettuce salad, but incredibly yummy and perfect for family dinners. Or, if you’re interested in doubling or tripling the recipe, you can serve this at a dinner party or larger gathering.
- Bacon Avocado Chicken Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette. Controversial statement incoming; I don’t like bacon. And, I’m also not a fan of adding it to salads.
- BLTA Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps. I know, I know, another bacon recipe. What am I doing? Well, it wouldn’t make sense to leave these Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps off of the list.
- Fattoush Salad. This recipe is a great way to enjoy romaine lettuce. Another fan favorite at my family dinners, Fattoush Salad, packs a zippy punch because it calls for lemon, garlic, and sumac.

- Classic Caesar Salad. A great Caesar salad gets its swagger from a great dressing. Squeamish about raw egg yolks and anchovies? Sorry. Yolks are what give richness to the emulsion, while anchovies provide a briny blast (and that whole umami thing).
- Little Gem Salad with Lemon Cream and Hazelnuts. Wait, whipped cream in a salad? Yep. This rich, bright lemon cream is perfectly suited for Little Gems. “The cream takes over your whole mouth,” says chef Joshua McFadden, “while the lemon juice acts as a bridge.”
- Black Tie Crudite with Whipped Ricotta. Intentionally burning vegetables—it’s a thing! The burnt onion powder adds a smoky, slightly bitter finish to the rich dip, and is responsible for the black part of this tuxedo-inspired crudite.
- Seared Steak Lettuce Cups. We like using tender butter lettuce for these edible cups. View Recipe.
- Iceberg Wedges with Grilled Bacon and Croutons. Who doesn’t love a wedge? Ask your butcher to cut slab bacon into thick slices (about ¼") to yield nice meaty pieces once they’re crisped on the grill.
- Steakhouse Salad with Red Chile Dressing and Peanuts. The steak can be marinated a day in advance—in fact, it gets better. Dress the salad at the last minute, so the lettuce doesn't wilt.
- Green Goddess Cobb Salad. To make addictively crispy chicken skin, turn it often in the skillet, until it looks like bacon. View Recipe.
- Grilled Little Gem Salad with Pita Croutons. Yes—you can grill lettuce. And it’s worth it. View Recipe.
- Grilled Vegetable Salad with Raw Green Mole. This uncooked mole gets heat from jalapeño, cooling freshness from lettuce and herbs, and a touch of richness from toasted seeds.
- Pickled Vegetable Salad with Nori Vinaigrette. It might seem fussy to separate the vegetables when pickling, but if they’re combined, the colors will bleed and they won’t be as vibrant.
