Homemade Silver Cleaner image

This electrochemical silver cleaning solution is amazing!

Provided by Joan Clark

Number Of Ingredients 4

Aluminum foil roasting pan
Bucket
1-2 gallons of hot water
2-4 cups of table salt

Steps:

  • Mix the water and salt in a bucket until the salt dissolves.
  • Place the silver in the foil pan, ensuring each piece touches the foil.
  • Pour the saltwater over the silver.
  • Remove the silver when the tarnish vanishes.
  • Rinse with warm water and towel dry.

My sterling jewelry was tarnished. A polishing cloth didn't clean it. So I tried this recipe. Wow! Amazing, inexpensive... Does a great job! You'll be wowed too! Works on other metals and is safe for stone jewelry too. Don't reuse the cleaner; make a new batch each time.

1 cup water
1 sheet aluminum foil
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon dish detergent

Steps:

  • Pour water into a microwave-safe mug or bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Line the bottom of a cereal bowl with aluminum foil. Pour hot water into the bowl. Add salt, baking soda, and dish detergent; do not stir. Place jewelry on top of foil. Let soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry well with a soft cloth.

  • Line a Dish With Foil. Line the bottom of an aluminum pan or glass baking dish with aluminum foil. You can use a plastic tub but be sure that it will not be damaged by the boiling water.
  • Place Silver on Foil. Place your silver pieces on top of the aluminum foil. Make sure they are touching the aluminum foil but the pieces themselves should not touch each other.
  • Add Salt and Baking Soda. Sprinkle two tablespoons of table salt and two tablespoons of baking soda into the container.
  • Soak for 2-3 Minutes. Allow the silver to soak for two to three minutes. Turn over the silver pieces using a wooden or plastic utensil (tongs work best) so that as many surfaces of the item touch the foil as possible.
