Categories     Appetizer

Time 1h35m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined*
2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup minced yellow onion
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt (more or less, to taste)
1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
2/3 cup chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add shrimp and cook, stirring frequently, for approximately 4 minutes, or until shrimp have just turned pink and are opaque.
  • Drain off juices (if any) and transfer to a plate to cool.
  • Chop shrimp into about 1/4-inch pieces.
  • In a large mixing bowl, stir together chopped shrimp, cream cheese, onion, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot sauce, garlic powder, salt and Old Bay Seasoning using a rubber spatula until well-combined.
  • Transfer cheese mixture to a plate and form into a ball.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until firm. Remove from refrigerator and coat with chopped pecans 10 minutes before serving (allowing time to slightly soften so it spreads easier).
  • Serve with crackers.

SHRIMP CHEESE BALL

Shrimp Cheese Ball image

Jo Magram prepared this Daddy-O recipe for our June 2014 meeting.

Provided by Club Recipes

Categories     Cheese Appetizers

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 pinch (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, room temperature
1 can(s) (6-ounce) small cooked shrimp
1 can(s) (6-ounce) can black olives, drained and chopped
seasoning salt to taste
lemon juice to taste
3 small green onions, finely chopped
chopped nuts
chopped fresh parsley
assorted crackers

Steps:

  • 1. In a large bowl, mash cream cheese with a fork. Add shrimp, black olives, seasoning salt, lemon juice, and green onions; stir until well blended. With your hands, form cheese mixture into a large ball. In a small bowl, combine nuts and parsley; roll cheese ball in nut mixture to coat completely. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with assorted crackers. Yields 1 ball.
  • 2. Note: Since this was for a larger crowd, I mixed all above and spread on 1/2 cut mini sweet peppers and crackers. This was done for ease in buffet line.
  • 3. Added thought: Can add "Old Bay" seasoning and/or a little heat if you desire. Can also substitute shrimp for crab, etc.

SHRIMP CHEESE BALL

Shrimp Cheese Ball image

This is a favorite recipe for Christmas gatherings at our home.

Provided by Julie Loveridge

Categories     Cheese Appetizers

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 pkg (8 oz size) cream cheese, room temperature
1 jar(s) (5 oz) kraft old english cheese
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp onion salt
1 tsp garlic salt
1 Tbsp parsley flakes
1 can(s) shrimp, drained and rinsed
1 1/2 c cheddar cheese, shredded
1 Tbsp salad dressing (miracle whip type)
walnuts and/or pecans - chopped
OPTIONAL:
1 tsp chives, dried
1 tsp pimento, chopped

Steps:

  • 1. Mix all ingredients EXCEPT the nuts in a large mixing bowl. Refrigerate until it is cold enough to mold into a ball and hold its shape.
  • 2. Divide into two large cheese balls or four smaller sized balls. Roll in chopped nuts until completely coated. (I am a nut fan, so I like to make sure there is a very heavy layer of nuts on each ball.)
  • 3. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated. Serve with a variety of snack crackers.
  • 4. Note: I use salad-size frozen shrimp, thawed, rinsed, and cut into smaller pieces, for a less fishy flavor. It does not have as long a shelf life, but I think the flavor exchange is worth it.
