Homemade Sloppy Joes image

Homemade Sloppy Joes come together in less than 30 minutes for a quick and easy dinner -- even on your busiest nights!

1 lb. ground beef
¼ cup finely diced onion ((frozen is fine))
1 clove garlic, minced (or ⅛ teaspoon dried garlic powder)
¾ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Dash of black pepper
For serving: sandwich buns

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain.
  • Whisk together the remaining ingredients to make the sauce. Add to the skillet with the beef, onion and garlic.
  • Simmer uncovered over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches desired consistency. You can keep the skillet covered if you like the sauce "sloppier." If the sauce is too thick, gradually stir in a small amount of warm water or beef broth. If the sauce is too thin, gradually sift in a small amount of flour while stirring vigorously to thicken.

1 pound lean ground beef
¼ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
¾ cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids.
  • Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

1 lb ground beef
1/2 c chopped celery
1/3 c chopped onion
2 Tbsp chopped green pepper
1 c ketchup
1/2 c chili sauce
1 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp cider vinegar
2 tsp ground mustard
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
hamburger buns

Steps:

  • 1. Cook beef, celery, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender. Drain.
  • 2. Stir in the ketchup, chili sauce, sugars, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer, uncovered for 15 minutes.

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

1 jar(s) chili sauce (12 oz)
1 jar(s) water, fill empty chili sauce bottle and use
1 c ketchup
1/4 c cider vinegar
1/2 c brown sugar
1/4 c sweet pickle relish (add more to taste)
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped

Steps:

  • 1. Brown ground beef and drain in a large skillet.
  • 2. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and sweet relish.
  • 3. Add all sauce ingredients and stir well. Turn heat to low. Cover and simmer for at least 2 hours.
  • 4. Make sure to stir often ad don't allow the mixture to dry out.
  • 5. Serve with your favorite rolls. Enjoy!
