- Drizzle it on soups. Credit: Photo: Hector Manuel Sanchez. Instead of topping a soup with heavy cream or yogurt, add a swirl or toasted sesame oil to the bowl after serving.
- Whisk it into vinaigrette. Credit: Photo: Jennifer Causey. If you’re already in the habit of making your own salad dressings, you know how easy it is to customize a basic template.
- Hit a stir-fry. Credit: Photo: Jennifer Causey. Although you won’t want to use toasted sesame oil to cook your tofu, meat, or veggies (remember that smoke point), it is genius when added at the very end of the recipe.
- Use it to coat noodles. Need a break from marinara? Whisk a little peanut butter, toasted sesame oil, ginger, and tamari together, then add it to cooked, strained rice noodles.
- Dress up popcorn. Better than butter? You bet. Hit those popped kernels with some toasted sesame oil, sesame seeds, a little salt, and nutritional yeast.
- Drizzle it over ice cream. Sounds crazy? Trust me on this one. A little toasted sesame, some crushed peanuts, and green tea ice cream. It’s an unexpected flavor roller coaster that’ll make you forget all about hot fudge.

- Prep and marinate chicken: Add all the chicken and marinade ingredients to a bowl and toss well to break up the egg white. Marinate for 10 minutes.
- Prepare sauce: In another bowl add the chicken broth, rice vinegar, honey, soy sauce, sesame oil and whisk well.
- Dredge chicken through flour: Add the flour to a shallow plate or bowl. Toss in the chicken pieces and the marinade, then use your hands to toss everything together.
- Fry chicken: Add about a cup of oil to a wok or skillet and heat over high heat. When the oil is hot enough, add a few chicken pieces at once, shaking off any excess flour and fry for about 3 to 4 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Drain on a plate lined with kitchen towels. Repeat with remaining chicken, it will take about 3 batches.

- Peanut oil. Sesame oil has a nutty taste—and so do actual nuts. Peanut oil is a close match to milder (i.e., lighter) types of sesame oil in terms of sapidity and has the added bonus of being able to handle high heat so you can cook without setting off smoke alarms.
- Canola oil. Convenience is key here because you probably have a bottle of canola oil in your cupboard. This substitute lacks the earthiness of roasted sesame oil, but its neutral flavor is similar to lighter, unroasted forms of the golden stuff—and it’s a trusty companion for high-heat cooking of all kinds.
- DIY sesame oil. If you’ve got some sesame seeds hanging out in your spice rack then your problem is solved. Simply toast them over low heat in your skillet, add a neutral oil (like canola) and you’ve mastered a chef trick that produces a near-flawless imitation of store-bought sesame oil.
- Avocado oil. Sesame’s nutty character is notably absent here, but avocado oil’s creaminess makes a great swap in terms of richness. (Meaning this one’s ideal for recipes that require sesame oil for cooking and texture, rather than taste.)
- Tahini. This creamy, savory substance is made from sesame seeds that have been soaked and crushed into something glorious and…oily. Unsurprisingly, the earthy and complex character of tahini has a lot in common with pure sesame oil.
- Walnut oil. This is another nut oil that successfully mimics the savory depth of sesame oil. It’s not meant for cooking, though, since it can turn bitter when heated.
- Sesame seeds. If you swapped sesame oil for canola and are lamenting your dish’s lack of depth, it’s not too late to make things right. Save the flavor with a little seasoning: Sprinkle sesame seeds on your plate for a pretty garnish that will satisfy your tastebuds too.
- Pernilla oil. Pernilla oil comes from seeds that boast the same rich and nutty flavor profile as sesame. This alternative also shares the high smoke point of sesame oil so it works just as well for frying.

- Grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil is the best substitute for sesame oil not only in terms of taste. However, also thanks to its high smoking point. You can use it in pasta, lasagna, soups, stews, baked meals, and different salads.
- Sunflower oil. This oil can replace sesame seeds mostly in cooked dishes. It has a high heat resistance that you will enjoy. And it is easy to use in any type of recipe.
- Canola oil. Canola oil is a very good replacement for sesame oil as it has a neutral taste. It works well in most recipes. This oil has a golden color that will go great in your foods.
- Olive oil. If you choose to replace sesame oil with olive oil, you can use this product in both salads and cooked dishes. It has a high heat tolerance but will reach higher temperatures faster than other types of oil.
- Avocado oil. Avocado oil can replace sesame oil in almost any recipe but you have to keep in mind that this oil comes in a stronger flavor than sesame oil.
- Walnut oil. Walnut oil can replace sesame oil mostly in cold dishes. The taste is fairly similar even if the walnut oil will add a more nutty flavor to your food.
- Roasted sesame seeds. If you don’t want to use any oil instead of sesame oil but you like the flavor sesame seeds bring to your dish you can choose to add roasted sesame seeds directly.
- Perilla oil. If you are looking to keep the nutty flavor in your dish, you will love Perilla oil. You can use this replacement for frying as well as for seasoning salads and it will work just as well.
- Hemp seeds oil. The hemp seed oil has plenty of health benefits. So, you can use it not only as a substitute for sesame oil but also as part of your hair care and skincare routine.
- Peanut oil. Peanut oil might not be as common as other substitutes. However, it is definitely a great choice to go for if you are missing sesame oil from your kitchen.
