CRISPY SESAME TOFU

Crispy Sesame Tofu image

Using a nonstick skillet to make this dish will help the tofu brown evenly with less oil. Wiping the skillet with a paper towel after step 2 will keep the broccoli green.Tofu will take on the taste of whatever food it is cooked with. It is high in protein and is also a very good source of B vitamins and iron.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 one-pound block firm tofu
1/4 cup sesame seeds
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 head (about 1 1/4 pounds, stems and florets) broccoli, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
Salt and fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • Place block of tofu flat on cutting board; slice lengthwise into 4 equal pieces, then down the middle to make 8 squares. Place on baking sheet lined with three layers of paper towels; cover with three more layers. Place another baking sheet and a weight on top. Let tofu drain until towels are soaked, 5 minutes.
  • Spread the sesame seeds on a plate. Press both sides of each tofu square into sesame seeds. In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon sesame oil over medium heat. Cook tofu, until golden brown, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Add the soy sauce; continue cooking, turning tofu, until it has absorbed all the liquid, about 1 minute. Remove from pan. Wipe skillet with a paper towel.
  • Add broccoli, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, and 1/2 cup water to skillet. Simmer, covered, until broccoli is tender, about 5 minutes. Divide among 4 serving plates; arrange 2 tofu squares on each. Drizzle with remaining tablespoon sesame oil. Serve.

CRISPY SESAME TOFU

Crispy Sesame Tofu image

This sesame tofu recipe is easy to make in the air fryer or oven, and it's crispy, nutty, and delicious! It comes from The Skinnytaste Air Fryer Cookbook by Gina Homolka.

Provided by Gina Homolka

Categories     Main dish

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 17

7 ounces extra-firm tofu (drained and cut into 4 (1/2-inch thick) slices)
2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon light brown sugar
1 garlic clove (grated)
1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1/3 cup white and black sesame seeds
1 egg
olive oil spray
4 teaspoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce
Cilantro Lime Rice or Cauliflower Rice
1 cup snap peas (steamed and chopped)
1/3 cup frozen edamame (steamed)
1 scallion (chopped)
tamari (for drizzling)

Steps:

  • Place the tofu slices on a kitchen towel or paper towels. Place another towel on top and lightly press to remove most of the water from the tofu. Transfer to a shallow dish big enough for the tofu to lie in a single layer.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. Drizzle half of the marinade over the tofu, then gently flip and drizzle the rest on the other side. Marinate in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 400°F or preheat a regular oven to 350°F.
  • Place the sesame seeds on a small plate. In a small bowl, beat the egg. Remove each tofu slice from the marinade, allowing the excess to drip off, then dip in the egg. Using a fork, dip in the sesame seeds, coating each side. Transfer to a plate. Spray one side with olive oil, then gently flip and spray the other side. (Discard the excess marinade.)
  • To make the tofu in an air fryer: Working in batches, arrange a single layer of the tofu in the air fryer basket. Cook for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway, until toasted and crisp.
  • To bake the tofu in the oven: Place the tofu on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Make the sriracha mayo. In a small bowl, mix together the mayo and sriracha.
  • Serve the tofu steaks with rice, snap peas, edamame, scallions, sriracha mayo, and tamari, for drizzling.

Provided by Viva!

Categories     Family recipes

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 block firm tofu (350g)
5 tbsp cornflour
5 tbsp unsweetened soy milk
125g/½ cup golden or panko breadcrumbs
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp nutritional yeast
3 tbsp sesame seeds
Olive oil spray (optional)
Spring onions (scallions) for garnishing

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 180C (360F).
  • To prepare your tofu, first remove it from the packaging and shake off excess liquid. No need to wrap in kitchen towels as some recipes advise - I find gently squeezing the tofu between my hands over the sink to be the best way and only takes about 30 seconds! Just be careful not to squeeze too hard and break or crumble the tofu.
  • Now slice the tofu into small squares, rectangles or triangles.
  • Prepare your coating mixture by making three dipping bowls. In the first, add the cornflour. In the second, the soy milk, and in the third, mix the breadcrumbs, sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  • Take a tofu piece, toss to coat in the flour, then dip in the soy milk, then press into the breadcrumb mixture to coat generously on all sides and place on the baking tray.
  • Repeat for all the tofu pieces. Now you can spritz lightly with the olive oil spray (this is optional but will help the coating to brown). Pop the tray into the oven for approx. 20 minutes until the coating is crisp and golden brown.
  • Garnish with spring onions and enjoy on their own or with your favourite dipping sauce!

SESAME BAKED TOFU RECIPE

Sesame Baked Tofu Recipe image

This vegan tofu dish is baked in a sesame marinade and eaten with steamed veggies, on its own, or on a sandwich or salad.

Provided by Ashley Adams

Categories     Dinner     Entree     Lunch     Side Dish

Time 4h40m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 pound tofu (Chinese-style extra-firm, pressed )
1/2 cup soy sauce (reduced-sodium)
3 tablespoons sesame oil (dark, often referred to as toasted sesame oil)
1 tablespoons garlic (minced)
1 teaspoon ginger (fresh, minced)
2 tablespoons sugar (white or, alternatively, agave nectar or maple syrup)
1/4 cup sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Slice the pressed tofu horizontally into 16 pieces (each will be about 1/4-inch thick), then slice lengthwise down the middle so that you have about 32 (2-inch) squares. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, sugar, and sesame seeds, stirring until well mixed.
  • Pour a small amount of this mixture into a casserole dish or baking dish. Place all of the tofu squares into the dish in a single layer then pour the remaining marinade over the tofu. Place the pan in the refrigerator, and allow tofu to marinate for 4 hours or overnight, flipping the tofu once or twice to make sure that it evenly marinates.
  • Heat the oven to 400 F. Lightly oil a cookie sheet or baking pan and, using a spatula, transfer the marinated tofu onto the pan, spacing the pieces so that they do not touch one another.
  • Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, flipping once halfway through, or until the tofu reaches the desired texture. (The longer you bake the tofu, the firmer, denser, chewier, and crispier it will become; the less you bake it, the softer it will be.)
  • Allow tofu to cool for a minute or two in the pan before serving. Serve hot or cold.

CRISPY SESAME CRUSTED TOFU

Crispy Sesame Crusted Tofu image

Marinated tofu in a crispy crunch sesame crust. Great for a vegan appetizer or as a main dish served with your favourite sides. Gluten-free and oil-free options.

Provided by Sam Turnbull • It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken

Categories     Appetizer     Main Course

Time 1h40m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 block (350g) extra-firm tofu, ((see step 1 for prep))
1/4 cup soy sauce ((gluten-free if preferred))
2 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons sesame oil ((omit for oil-free))
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour ((gluten-free if preffered))
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons ground flax or ground chia
1/2 cup sesame seeds (white, black, or a mix)
1/2 cup panko or crushed corn flakes ((gluten-free if preferred))

Steps:

  • To prep the tofu: Prepare the tofu by draining it, and then pressing it for 30 minutes to 1 hour. I love using my Tofuture tofu press, but you can also follow these instructions for a DIY tofu pressing method. Pressing the tofu squeezes excess water out so that the tofu can suck up more of the marinade and become more flavourful. Once pressed, remove the tofu and pat dry, then cut into triangles (about 16).
  • Marinate: mix together all of the sesame marinade ingredients in a sealable bag or container, then add the tofu. Let the tofu marinate for a minimum of 30 minutes or as long as overnight in the fridge, flipping the tofu every now and then to ensure all sides get marinated.
  • OVEN: When ready to finish the tofu, preheat your oven to 400F (200C). Lightly grease or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.AIR FRYER: When ready to finish the tofu, preheat your oven to 370F (190C).
  • Crust the tofu: Grab three big bowls. In the first bowl, add the flour. In the second bowl, add the flax and water and pour in any leftover unabsorbed marinade, and mix together, the flax will thicken the mixture in 5 - 10 minutes. For the third bowl, mix the sesame seeds and panko.
  • Add the tofu to the flour bowl and toss to coat. Next, coat one tofu triangle at a time in the flax mixture and then roll it in the sesame panko coating. Place the crusted tofu on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining tofu.
  • OVEN: Spread the tofu out on the baking sheet so that they aren't touching, this will ensure the tofu gets crispy all the way around. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until golden and crusty.AIR FRYER: Place the tofu in a single layer in the air fryer. You may need to work in batches. Fry 16 - 20 minutes, until golden and crusty.Serve hot as a main with sides of choice, or serve as an appetizer with your favourite dipping sauce.

AJI BAKED TOFU WITH BLACK SESAME SEEDS

Aji Baked Tofu With Black Sesame Seeds image

This recipe calls for Aji Sesame Oil-- a sesame oil that has been infused with red chilies and is SPICY. I accidentally bought it at my local asian grocery and am now hooked. You can typically find black sesame seeds at asian grocery stores as well. This tofu goes beautifully over sticky brown rice, crunchy steamed broccoli and a little soy sauce drizzled over the whole shebang. I'm a single lady who loves to chow down, so this recipe was a perfect entree-sized amount for just me, but could probably be split between two people willing to share.

2 Tbsp cornstarch
1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil

2 tsp honey
1 ½ tsp chili garlic sauce
½ tsp rice wine vinegar
2 tsp cornstarch
Sesame seeds, to garnish

SESAME CRUSTED TOFU STEAKS WITH TERIYAKI SAUCE

Sesame Crusted Tofu Steaks with Teriyaki Sauce image

Recipe video above. Sesame seeds add excellent flavour and give tofu a crispy crust crust that stays crispy even when doused with Teriyaki Sauce. Great quick and easy recipe to convert tofu haters - so far from bland, we're in a different stratosphere!

Provided by Nagi

Categories     Main

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 extra firm or hard tofu (, cut into 10 x 5 x 1.5cm slices (4 x 2 x 0.6"), 100g / 3.5oz each (Note 1))
1/4 tsp each salt and pepper
2 tbsp flour (, plain/all purpose)
1 egg (, lightly whisked)
4 tbsp white sesame seeds ((Note 2) (yes, you really need 4 tbsp!))
4 tbsp black sesame seeds ((Note 2))
2 tbsp canola/vegetable oil
2 garlic cloves (, finely sliced 1mm thick (optional, Note 2))
1 green onion (, finely sliced (for garnish))
2 tbsp soy sauce (, preferably Japanese all-purpose, else light soy sauce (Note 4))
2 tbsp mirin (, preferably Japanese (Note 5))
2 tbsp cooking sake (, preferably Japanese (Note 6))
2 tbsp water

Steps:

  • Season tofu: Pat tofu dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Prepare crust coating: Place flour, egg and sesame in separate bowls (medium shallow bowls or tupperware best).
  • Sesame crust: Press tofu into flour, shake off excess. Dip in egg, then let excess drip off before coat in sesame seeds, pressing to adhere all over. Repeat with remaining tofu.
  • Crispy garlic: Heat oil in a non stick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until golden and crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Cook tofu: Turn heat up to medium-high. Place tofu in skillet and cook for 1 1/2 minutes until the sesame smells nutty and becomes crisp. Turn carefully and cook the other side for 1 1/2 minutes. Then use tongs to prop the tofu steaks up on its sides to sear the edges until crisp - about 30 seconds each side should do it (see video for my technique).
  • Drain: Remove tofu to paper towel lined plate.
  • Teriyaki Sauce: Lower heat to medium then add Teriyaki Sauce ingredients. Simmer for 1 minute until it reduces to a syrupy consistency, then remove skillet from stove.
  • Serve: Place tofu steak on plate. Spoon over Teriyaki Sauce (it clings to sesame, don't worry, crust stays crispy). Sprinkle with garlic and green onion. Devour, then declare, "I LOVE TOFU!!".

Then cut each section into strips. Then cut the strips into cubes. Transfer the cubes to another cutting board covered in a few layers of paper towels. Add a few more paper towels to the top of the tofu and add something heavy on top of the tofu, such as a cast iron skillet or a couple heavy cutting boards or pots. Leave for about 15 minutes until as much moisture as possible is removed from the tofu.
