SCOUT TRAIL MIX
This is a Trail mix I make when I would go help out at Scout Day Camp. The scouts in my group will do just about any thing for a hand full. I make this in two batches on with nuts and one with out.

Steps:
- Combine the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Either put in large bag or many small ones.
- Note: You may want to add other tropical items, if you can find them.
- Try sesame seeds, brazil nuts, dried papaya and macadamia nuts.
TRAIL MIX CAKE
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottoms of two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- Place the cranberries in a medium saucepan and add the orange juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat on the stove top. Cover and remove from the heat. Refrigerate until completely cooled.
- Sift the flour, baking powder and baking soda into a medium bowl. Add the salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the almond extract. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the buttermilk, beginning with the dry ingredients and ending with the buttermilk. Mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition. Fold in the chocolate chips, coconut flakes, almonds and sunflower seeds. Drain the cranberries well and gently fold into the cake batter.
- Divide the batter between the two prepared cake pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes.
- Remove from the pans and cool the cake layers completely.
- Top one of the layers with some Trail Mix Buttercream, then place the second layer on top and decorate the outside of the cake with more of the buttercream and serve.
- In a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter. Add the confectioner's sugar and mix thoroughly. Fold in the almonds, cranberries, pineapple and sunflower seeds.
GROW A GIRL SCOUT TROOP TRAIL MIX CEREMONY
we made this at an adult weekend training, and then again with the girls in Girl Led during their campout weekend. Everyone loved it...my advice? So that everyone gets some of each ingredient, don't just pass, walk around with a spoon/scoop. The girls at the front dumped all the good items, then there wasn't enough for everyone....

Steps:
- 1. While reading the story, pass the specific ingredient. We gave everyone paper lunch bags to put their ingredients into. ~Girl Scouts come in all colors, from all races around the world. Every Girl Scout is a sister no matter where she is from, no matter the language she speaks, no matter the color of her skin. God loves variety, and Girl Scouts are the colors of the rainbow. (M & M candies) ~We have a promise and a law. On our honor, we try to do our best to be fair and square (Chex cereal). ~Some of us are tall, and some of us are small. When we get together, size doesn't matter at all (pretzel thins/sticks and mini marshmallows). ~Sometimes we are nutty. We love to joke and play. We'd love to put a Girl Scout smile into everyone's day (Nuts...ASK ABOUT ALLERGIES FIRST). ~Sometimes we are quiet and thoughtful. We have special gifts of love and caring to give in service to those who need our help (Goldfish crackers, we used multi color ones). ~When we get together, we seem to make circles. We may sit in circles, play circle games, make a Friendship Circle. You could say that we are well-rounded (Cheerios). ~When we are busy planning a project, or doing a craft, we pop around until we're done (popcorn). ~Girl Scouts respect all living things. The earth is our home and we want to keep it safe for everyone (Animal Crackers). ~Girl Scouts are "chips off the old block". Girl Scouting began in 1912. Since then we all have been part of an old tradtion, and are proud to be part of the future (Banana chips or chocolate chips. We used semisweet and white chocolate chips). ~We get a kick out of wearing our uniforms, learning new things, helping others, and being together with our friends (Kix cereal). ~Young Girl Scouts may be hard to resist because they are fresh, sweet and new. But the older scout maybe more fun, because she has more experience (raisins). ~Welcome to Troop __________. I hope we will have a wonderful year!

- Reese’s Pieces – Crunchy candy shell + peanut butter center + not boring old chocolate = perfection. Can the whole trail mix just be this?
- Cashews – While it’s not technically a nut, it is technically the most delicious option among the nuts you’d put in trail mix.
- Chex cereals – We can have our favorite childhood cereal (seriously) in a trail mix? Yes, please!
- Granola – Tried and true. If our trail mix doesn’t have granola, we might just not hit the trail at all.
- Cheetos – Artificially orange and artificially cheesy, but authentically the kind of fun surprise you want to find when you dig the trail mix bag out of your daypack.
- M&Ms – If you haven’t already guessed, we’re suckers for a crunchy candy shell on a small, round treat.
- Salt – A little salt goes a loooooooooong way, but it does help kick up the flavor and, frankly, it makes trail mix taste like you always remember it.
