SASSAFRAS TEA

Sassafras Tea image

A good ol timey, fine-tasting tea. A very unique blend of flavors. I've been making sassafras tea since I was little. Easy to make and worth the effort. A great country drink. Don't drink too often though as too much sassafras tea can be harmful. Prep time depends on how long it takes you to find 4 4' tall saplings :)

Categories     Beverages

Time 45m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

4 1/4 inches sassafras root, means 4 pieces sassafras root 1/4 " to 1/2-inch inch in diameter
2 quarts water
sugar or honey

Steps:

  • Gather or buy the sassafrass root. Wash roots and cut saplings off where they're green and where the root ends.
  • Bring water to a boil and add roots.
  • Simmer until the water is a deep brownish red (the darker the stronger -- I like mine strong).
  • Strain into a pitcher through wire and a coffee filter if you don't want any sediment.
  • Add honey or sugar to taste.
  • Serve hot or cold (I like mine ice cold) with lemon and a sprig of mint.

HOW TO MAKE SASSAFRAS TEA FROM YOUR SASSAFRAS TREE ...

From doityourself.com
Estimated Reading Time 3 mins
  • Cut the Roots. You should never take the roots from someone else’s tree without their permission of course. You’ll need to dig or pull the roots up and cut them.
  • Wash the Roots. As soon as you have the root inside wash it carefully in warm water. Cut the root into small sized pieces—2 to 3 inches long should work well.
  • Dry the Roots. Find a cool, dark, and arid spot for the roots to dry. Don’t place them in a window as the sun exposure will make the root tasteless.
  • Pare the Roots. Using a small paring type knife strip the bark or skin from the roots cutting down into the woody part of the root. This is where the tree sap is stored for the winter months.
  • Refrigerate. Take these strips and put them in an airtight plastic bag. You can then refrigerate these until they’re ready to be used.
  • Make the Tea. When you are ready to enjoy your tea bring a quart of water to boil. Boil about 2 to 4 ounces of the roots in the water for around 20 minutes.
  • Season to Taste. Add sugar to taste. As a rule you will probably use the same amount of sugar or sugar substitute as you would in ice tea. If you prefer to make enough to enjoy for a while, then steep for a longer period and add the tea to a gallon container of water.
