THE BOULEVARDIER
A marvel of a cocktail with an enviably colorful peerage, the Boulevardier is effectively a cross between a Manhattan and a Negroni. In colder months, it's a magnificent drink to have as a fallback when you want something richer and more complex than just a whiskey but can never seem to think of what else to order. It's composed of two parts American whiskey, with one part each of sweet vermouth and Campari. Taken one way, it's a Manhattan with a portion of Campari swapped in for the regular few drops of Angostura or other aromatic bitters. Seen the other way, it's a Negroni with whiskey in place of the gin.

- Pour the rye, Campari, vermouth, aperitif, and bitters into a glass filled with ice cubes and mix well. Strain the mixture into a glass containing an extra-large ice cube. Remove as much pith as possible from the orange peel and trim the edges to form a rectangular shape. With a lit match, warm the outer side of the orange peel by rocking it back and forth over the flame, and then squeeze the peel until the flame and peel make sparks. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the glass.

- If the barrel is new and dry inside, fill it with water and let stand until watertight, about 24 hours. Drain.
- Using a funnel, fill the barrel with all of the liquid ingredients. Let age, tasting a sample once a week, until the cocktail has taken on a rounded but not overly oaky flavor, about 1 month.
- Strain the cocktail through a coffee filter–lined funnel into a glass container and store indefinitely.
