PENNY'S RUSTIC APPLESAUCE

Penny's Rustic Applesauce image

When my kids were little they loved applesauce. I started making it myself so I could control exactly what was in it. Of course you can peel the apples and blend it to make a fine smooth applesauce. But we love to leave the skins on and we enjoy "texture" in the sauce. Now some may call that lumps - we just call it yummy!

Provided by Penny Burdge

Categories     Fruit Sides

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 large apples, granny smith
3 large apples, gala or braeburn
1/4 c brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 c apple cider
dash salt
1 Tbsp cider vinegar
1 Tbsp unsalted butter

Steps:

  • 1. Wash the apples. Quarter, remove seeds and core. Cut into 1 inch dice. You can peel the apples if you prefer, but the red and green skins give the sauce a nice color and an interesting texture.
  • 2. Place apple cider, cider vinegar, cinnamon, sugar, dash of salt and apples into a large saucepan.
  • 3. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir well, then reduce temperature to low, cover and cook until the apples are tender.
  • 4. Using an immersion blender, a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon, process the apples to the desired chunkiness. Adjust cinnamon and sugar to your taste. Stir in the butter.

MAPLE CINNAMON APPLESAUCE

Maple Cinnamon Applesauce image

Naturally sweetened, rustic homemade applesauce that cooks in under twenty minutes. This chunky applesauce tastes just like apple pie filling-serve it on oatmeal or pancakes for breakfast, as a sweet snack (try adding yogurt and granola), or dessert (with ice cream, perhaps?). I like mine with creamy steel-cut oats and a swirl of homemade pecan butter.

Provided by Cookie and Kate

Categories     Side

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 Gala apples (or another variety of sweet red apple)
3 Granny Smith or pippin apples
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons real maple syrup*
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (or more to taste)
dash of sea salt

Steps:

  • Peel, core and chop the apples into 2-inch chunks. In a heavy, nonreactive Dutch oven or saucepan over medium heat, combine the apple chunks, maple syrup, cinnamon and lemon juice. Cover and simmer for about 12 minutes, or until the apples have softened up a bit.
  • Uncover the pot and continue cooking, stirring occasionally to break up the larger chunks, until the apples are soft but still have some texture (5 to 10 minutes). Remove from heat and, if necessary, add more maple syrup, cinnamon or lemon juice, to taste. Serve warm or chilled; let it cool to room temperature before storing it in the fridge.

RUSTIC APPLESAUCE

Rustic Applesauce image

A combination of sweet Braeburns and tart Granny Smiths gives this applesauce a pleasant balance. Mashing the apples creates a chunky sauce; for a smoother version, process part or all of the apple mixture in a food processor or blender. Creme fraiche gives the sauce a smooth, rich finish; substitute full fat sour cream if your market doesn't carry it.

EASIEST PEACH-APPLESAUCE RECIPE

Easiest Peach-Applesauce Recipe image

The easiest recipes are the ones in which no true recipe is needed. This peach-applesauce qualifies as no recipe needed. All you need are peaches and apples, in any ratio you desire. I like 1-1 or 1/3-2/3 peaches to apples. The peaches thin out the thick applesauce just enough and create a delicately sweet, enjoyable snack!

Provided by Dana

Number Of Ingredients 2

Apples (washed & quartered)
Peaches (pitted)

Steps:

  • Add apples and peaches to a large stockpot. I like to add half and half apples to peaches ratio to the pot or 1/3 peaches to 2/3 apples. It's up to your preference!
  • Let simmer and soften about 30 minutes. Stir the pot frequently to keep the mixture from burning.
  • Process apples and peaches through a food mill or large food strainer to remove skins and apple seeds.
  • Add the sauce back into the large stockpot.
  • Ladle into quart jars and process in a water bath canner for 20 minutes. Let cool overnight and transfer to storage. Don't forget to label your jars!
