CLASSIC NEGRONI

Classic Negroni image

Nostrana, an Italian restaurant in Portland, Ore., has offered a Negroni of the Month since 2010, all original creations, some of them quite odd (squid ink Negroni, anyone?). But the house Negroni follows classic lines, using equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari.

Provided by Robert Simonson

Categories     cocktails

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 ounce gin, preferably Bombay Dry
1 ounce sweet vermouth, preferably Cinzano Rosso
1 ounce Campari
Orange twist

Steps:

  • Combine all liquid ingredients with ice in a mixing glass and stir until chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Squeeze orange twist over drink and slip into glass.

CYN-CYN

Cyn-Cyn image

I'll admit it: I have a mild case of Negroni fatigue. It's a good drink, for sure - and when it's beautifully made, I readily succumb to its charms - but its ubiquity in recent years has become a tiny bit tiresome. So I welcome its rarer, lighter cocktail cousin, the Cyn Cyn, in which Cynar - the wonderful, mysterious, arguably underappreciated amaro made with artichoke - replaces Campari. It's a favorite aperitivo of the author Elizabeth Minchilli, whose elegant, straightforward recipe this is.

Provided by Rosie Schaap

Categories     cocktails

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 oz. Cynar
1 oz. gin
1 oz. red vermouth
Meyer lemon (if possible - if not, regular lemon will suffice)

Steps:

  • Pour liquids into a rocks glass, and add a squeeze of Meyer lemon. Add as much ice as will fit. Optional garnish: a twist of lemon peel.
