Authentic Mexican Refried Beans Recipe (Frijoles Refritos) image

Mexican refried beans or frijoles refritos are a Mexican food staple that everyone should master. You'll love this easy authentic refried beans recipe because it's better than canned or restaurant refried beans. This recipe makes THE best refried beans!

2 cups homemade pinto beans ((include some cooking liquid or boiling broth too))
3 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil of choice)
⅓ cup of finely chopped white onion
2 to 3 whole dried chiles de arbol (or dried/fresh chile of choice)
large pinch sea salt (adjust to taste (kosher salt may also be used))

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a large frying pan, once it's hot add the onion and cook until browned and crispy (this gives it a great taste, or you can just sauté until tender.) Next add the dried or fresh chiles and cook just until they brown or begin to blister -- this happens quickly so be ready to proceed.
  • Next add the boiled beans -- be careful because it will splash, allow to fry for about 3 minutes. Next add about ¼ cup of the broth and then begin mashing the beans until you achieve the desired texture. The broth will help with the mashing and you'll need to add a little bit of the broth to help you achieve the texture you desire.
  • Continue to "fry" for about 5-8 minutes or until they have the consistency you want. Remember to adjust the consistency to your needs by cooking longer to thicken or adding more broth/water to thin out. Taste and add salt as desired.

2 tablespoons canola oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled
2 (15 ounce) cans pinto beans
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
salt to taste
½ lime, juiced

Steps:

  • Heat canola oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook garlic cloves in hot oil, turning once, until brown on both sides, 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Smash garlic cloves in skillet with a fork.
  • Stir pinto beans, cumin, chili powder, and salt into mashed garlic and cook until beans are thoroughly heated, about 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Smash bean mixture with a potato masher to desired texture. Squeeze lime juice over smashed beans and stir until combined.

This quick and easy refried bean burger is made with canned refried beans making it convenient to make on a weeknight meal. These are moist, delicious and 100% vegan.

1 tsp Oil + more for cooking the burgers
1 Small Red onion, finely chopped
1 tsp Ginger + garlic paste (or use 1tsp each of finely chopped ginger and garlic)
16 oz. Can of vegan Refried Beans
½ cup Besan (Chickpea flour)
¼ cup Wholewheat bread crumbs
¼ cup Oat flour*
1 tsp Chole or Garam Masala (homemade or store bought)
1 tsp Red chili powder
To taste Salt

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a saute pan; add the onions and cook until lightly browned around the edges, about 5 minutes.
  • Add ginger + garlic paste and cook for another minute. Turn off the heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the refried beans, chickpea flour, oat flour,bread crumbs, chole masala, red chili powder and salt. Mix well.
  • Add the onion mixture and mix well to form a mixture that holds together when squeezed. If the mixture is too wet, add more oat flour or bread crumbs to absorb the moisture.
  • Divide the mixture into 6 equal size patties, about 1/3 cup each.
  • Heat 2tbsp oil in a non-stick pan on medium heat, gently place the burgers and cook them undisturbed for about 3~4 minutes lightly browned on the bottom. Flip and cook on the other side until golden brown crust forms on both the sides.
  • Enjoy on your favorite bun with your favorite burger accouterments.

It's tasty! I suppose I didn't have anything else around so I started thinking:) Preparation time is about 5 minutes if you toast the bread. This recipe is for when you want to make one sandwich. You can make as many as you wish.

2 slices white bread (I haven't tried any other types of bread, toasted is fine)
1 (16 ounce) can refried beans (I like the Taco Bell brand)
5 dill pickle slices or 5 dill pickle spears, to taste
1 tablespoon mayonnaise, to taste
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Heat refried beans in small pan till warm (optional).
  • I like it right out of the can too.
  • Take sufficient amount of refried beans from can or pan to place on one slice of bread (depends on how hungry you are).
  • Add mayonnaise, pickles, salt and pepper according to your preference over beans.
  • Add the other slice of bread and eat away!
  • Don't knock it until you try it.

Steps:

  • Spread beans onto 4 bread slices. Top each with 1 Singles and 1 tomato slice. Cover with remaining Singles and bread slices to make 4 sandwiches.
  • Spread outsides of sandwiches with butter.
  • Cook in skillet on medium heat 4 min. on each side or until sandwiches are golden brown on both sides and Singles are melted. Cool 2 min. before cutting in half.

3 tablespoons refried bean mixture
1/4 cup shredded vegan cheddar
2 teaspoons vegan mayo ((for cooking the grilled cheese in))

Steps:

  • Spread refried bean mixture on one slice of bread. Top with shredded vegan cheddar. Top with other slice of bread.
  • Spread 1 teaspoon vegan mayo on the outside of one of the slices of bread. Place face down in a hot pan. While the grilled cheese is cooking over medium heat, spread the other teaspoon of vegan mayo on the other piece of bread (the side facing you). Cook until golden brown on both sides.

1 cup refried beans (Old El Paso)
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 small white onion, coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons canned jalapeno slices, quartered
1 ounce white cheddar cheese
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 -8 romaine lettuce leaves, washed and trimmed
1 teaspoon French dressing, per sandwich
4 sandwich buns

Steps:

  • In a medium size skillet, heat the olive oil, saute the onion until slightly cooked, add the garlic, cook 1 minute.
  • Add the refried beans, cook and stir until heated, reduce heat to low.
  • Add the cheese. Stir to melt through.
  • Toss in the jalapeno slices. Leave on low heat until heated through. Meanwhile, toast the sandwich rolls, open faced, under the broiler, until golden.
  • Prepare the lettuce.
  • When time for assembling the sandwich, season the beans with salt and pepper. Spread the bean mixture onto the sandwich roll. Top with lettuce and the French dressing.

  • If you want to make the bean puree, start by roughly chopping 1/2 an onion and peel 2 garlic cloves. Saute the onion and garlic in a dollop of oil over medium heat for 5-7 minutes. Drain and rinse one can of black beans. Add the black beans to the onion mixture along with 2 chipotles in adobo, 1 Tablespoon adobo sauce, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt, freshly ground pepper, and 1/2 cup water (or stock). Simmer for a few minutes until heated through. Combine the bean mixture in a blender or food processor. Salt to taste.
  • If making fresh Pico de Gallo, start by giving the veggies a good rinse. Chop up 2 tomatoes, 1/2 onion, 1/2 jalapeno, and 15-20 sprigs cilantro.   • Top each roll with a layer of beans and shredded cheese. Bake for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is thoroughly melted.
