CRISPY BAKED ONION RINGS

Crispy Baked Onion Rings image

Ditch the deep fryer in favor of this quick and easy recipe for crispy, baked onion rings!

Provided by Kelly Senyei

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 large Vidalia onions
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 large egg whites
2 Tablespoons mayonnaise
1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs (See Kelly's Note)
Cooking spray

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F. Grease a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
  • Slice the onions into 1/2-inch wide rings then place the rings in a bowl of water.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. In a second medium bowl, whisk together the egg whites and the mayonnaise. Add the breadcrumbs to a third medium bowl.
  • Remove each onion ring from the water, shaking off any excess and then placing it immediately into the flour, tossing until it's thoroughly coated, then dip the onion ring into the egg white mixture until it's thoroughly coated and then into the breadcrumbs, pressing them firmly onto all sides of the onion ring. Place the onion ring on the prepared baking sheet and repeat the coating process with the remaining onion rings.
  • Throughly spray the onion rings with cooking spray (this is optional, but it helps them brown more evenly). Bake the onion rings for 10 minutes then flip them once and bake an additional 5 minutes until they're golden brown and crispy. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

OLD FASHIONED ONION RINGS

Old Fashioned Onion Rings image

This is an actual recipe from a former employee of a popular drive-in restaurant. Crispy coated onion rings like the pro's make!

Provided by JeanieMomof3

Categories     Side Dish     Vegetables     Onion

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

RED ALE ONION RINGS

Red Ale Onion Rings image

When it comes to salty fried snacks, onion rings seem to always play second fiddle to the french fries. But there's something so old-school Americana about a perfectly battered onion ring that I can rarely pass up. The toasted caramel notes from the red ale really make this batter special. Try these rings with my Jerk Ketchup, and they might just become your favorite snack.

Categories     appetizer

Time 30m

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 20

About 4 cups (1 liter) canola oil, for deep-frying
2 large Vidalia onions
1 cup (125 grams) all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 cup (8 fluid ounces/240 milliliters) red ale
Coarse sea salt
Jerk Ketchup, for serving, recipe follows
1 cup (240 milliliters) ketchup
Juice of 1 lime
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • Pour 4 inches (10 centimeters) oil into an 8-quart (8 liter) Dutch oven and bring to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) over medium-high heat.
  • While the oil comes to temperature, peel the onions and slice into rings 1/2 inch (12 millimeter) thick.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Whisk in the ale until the ingredients are combined. The batter should be thick but slightly loose.
  • Place a wire rack in a sheet pan. Working in batches, dip the rings into the batter. Drain off any excess batter back into the bowl, then slowly lower the onions into the hot oil. Cook, flipping the onions every 30 seconds, until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Using a spider, transfer the onions to the wire rack and lightly season with sea salt.
  • In a nonreactive medium bowl, combine the ketchup, lime juice, brown sugar, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, allspice, cayenne, pepper flakes, and salt and mix until incorporated. Use immediately or transfer the ketchup to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
