Rainbow & Tie Dyed Pancakes image

These are fun pancakes for a family or holiday brunch! Gavin (my 8 year old grandson) said, "I liked how pretty they were and how good they tasted." This recipe makes a big batch of pancakes. We make the silver dollar size ones first and the big tie dye ones last. We put the left over pancakes in zipper bags and either save for the next day or freeze them.

BATTER
4 cup(s) flour
1 1/2 cup(s) powdered milk
1 1/2 tablespoon(s) baking powder
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1/3 cup(s) sugar
1 large lemon (zest and juice)
4 large eggs (well beaten)
4 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil
2 cup(s) water (add slowly to desired consistancy)
DYE
- food coloring: purple, blue, green yellow orange and red (to desired brightness or darkness)
OIL
- thin coating of vegetable oil for frying pan or griddle

Steps:

  • In large bowl: Mix together dry ingredients.
  • In smaller bowl: Beat eggs well. Add other liquids and zest. (saving back some of the water to use as needed). Divide batter into bowls and add food coloring. Blue

  • yellow
  • orange
  • purple
  • Make like you would any silver dollar pancake.
  • All the colors of the rainbow!
  • .Make the Tie Dye pancakes by swirling a little of each color of batter onto the griddle. Cook as you would any pancke.
  • .Plate the pancakes up.
  • *** Serve with desired type of eggs and pan fried Spam (ham, bacon or sausages).

  • Preheat griddle to 350 degrees or medium heat. Combine Bisquick, milk, and eggs in a medium-size mixing bowl and beat with a whisk until most of the lumps are gone in the batter.
  • Separate into three (or however many tie-dye colors you want!) bowls and add a small amount of gel coloring to each, mixing it into the batter and adding more gel to achieve the desired color intensity.
  • Tip: You can purchase plastic condiment containers for under a dollar at most stores. They work really well to apply the different colors of pancake batter where you want them on the griddle. It works the best to draw a circle with the colored batter and fill in with a tie dye design with different batter colors.
  • You can use a toothpick or the edge of a butter knife to swirl the colors together to make it look more like tie dye!
