SUGAR COOKIES WITH BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

Sugar Cookies with Buttercream Frosting image

These cookies are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. They are simple to make and kids love to lick the frosting off the tops. Butter flavoring is in the buttercream for added flavor. You can find it in most supermarkets, in the baking aisle, where there are other flavorings such as vanilla.

SUGAR COOKIE ICING

Sugar Cookie Icing image

This easy Sugar Cookie Icing recipe takes only minutes to make and it dries hard so you can stack or bag your beautifully decorated cookies!

Provided by Amy

Categories     Dessert

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups powdered sugar (, sifted)
3-4 tablespoons whole milk
1 1/2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract ((use clear vanilla extract if you need the icing to be bright white))
Pinch of salt ((optional depending on flavor preference))
Gel food coloring (, optional)
Plain cooled sugar cookies (, for decorating)

Steps:

  • Stir together the sugar, 3 tablespoons milk, corn syrup, and vanilla in a medium-sized bowl until combined.(If icing is too thick, add the remaining tablespoon of milk, until the icing is thick but pipeable. If it's too thin, add a little more powdered sugar until desired texture is reached. If you drizzle a little of the icing with a whisk, the ribbon of icing will hold for a few seconds before melting back into the icing. That is when you know it's the right consistency and is ready to use.)
  • If coloring the icing with different colors, divide into bowls and color as desired at this point.
  • Transfer icing to a piping bag with a piping tip (I use Wilton 5.)
  • Pipe icing onto cookies and decorate, as desired. (If using sanding sugar or sprinkles, they need to be added before the icing starts to set.)
  • Allow icing to completely harden at room temperature before enjoying (this can take anywhere from 3 hours to overnight depending on the consistency and thickness of your icing.)
  • NOTE: Don't miss all the coloring and decorating tips in the full article!
  • NOTE: This recipe makes enough to decorate 40, 3-inch cookies. Calories calculated are for the icing only and do not include cookies.

  • The consistency should be thick enough that it won't run off cookies, but thin enough that the icing "melts" back in on itself when you drizzle a spoonful over the bowl.Tip: If your icing looks too dry, add 1 teaspoon of milk until it looks like the consistency in the video. If it is too thin, add 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar until it looks like the consistency in the video.
  • Once you reach the correct consistency, add food coloring. I recommend squeezing a dot of food coloring on a paper plate, dipping the tip of a toothpick through it, then swiping it through the icing. This will allow you to control the amount of color you add.

  • How to Make Powdered Sugar. Making powdered sugar is the easiest thing in the world. All you’ll need is some cornstarch and granulated sugar. Put them both in a high-speed blender and blend until it gets fluffy!
  • Amish Sugar Cookies. Amish sugar cookies take 20 minutes to make and require fewer than ten very common ingredients. Seriously, the most “unique” ingredient on the list is cream of tartar, and you can find it for a few bucks on the spice aisle at Walmart.
  • Shortbread Cookies. If you have some butter, powdered sugar, salt, flour, and vanilla extract at your house, you can make four dozen of these fantastic shortbread cookies in under an hour.
  • Mexican Wedding Cookies. I love these lovely Mexican wedding cookies because they’re so pretty and fun. Of course, you’ll probably look a little less pretty after eating them and spilling powdered sugar all over your face, hands, and clothes, but that won’t make the cookies any less appetizing!
  • Lemon Drop Cookies. Lemon drop cookies have the same soft, melt-in-your-mouth consistency as sugar cookies. However, they’re covered in a tart, zesty icing made from lemon zest, lemon juice, and powdered sugar.
  • Powdered Sugar Glaze. Whether you want to use it on bread, donuts, strudel, cakes, or something else entirely, homemade powdered sugar glaze is the stuff.
  • Puppy Chow. Between this sweet treat’s two names – puppy chow and muddy buddies – you may be thinking about giving it a pass. It doesn’t sound very appealing, at least not for humans.
  • Almond Crescent Cookies. When I was little, my grandmother used to make these cookies all the time. We used to call them “moon cookies.” The name stuck, at least for me.
  • Eskimo Cookies. If you’ve heard me say it once, you’ve heard me say it a thousand times: I adore no-bake recipes! Don’t get me wrong; I love cooking, but sometimes it’s nice to just pull something simple together without having to heat up the kitchen or do any super hard work.
  • Sugar Cookie Bars. Imagine sugar cookies; only they’re nearly doubled in thickness. Now imagine them topped with rich vanilla frosting and sprinkles.

  • Stir together the confectioners’ sugar and milk until a smooth sauce forms and all lumps are dissolved. (If you’re using dairy free milk, start with 1/2 tablespoon and use just enough until it comes to a drizzleable consistency: most non-dairy milks aren’t as thick as standard milk.)
