Pluma Moos is a traditional Mennonite festive fruit soup served warm as a side dish or dessert on Christmas eve and morning by many families in Canada. Traditionally dried fruit was used but our family recipe calls for canned fruit.

1 (29 ounce) can peaches in light syrup
1 (29 ounce) can pears in light syrup
1 (16.5 ounce) can pitted dark sweet cherries in heavy syrup
½ cup dried pitted prunes
½ cup raisins
2 mandarin orange peels
2 cinnamon sticks

Steps:

  • Pour peaches, pears, cherries, and all syrups from the canned fruit into a large pot. Stir in prunes, raisins, mandarin orange peels, and cinnamon sticks; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until slightly thick, about 2 hours.
  • Serve warm. Remove orange peels and cinnamon sticks before serving.

5 lbs. 2.3 kg - Damson plums
Plums Coating Ingredients
¼ cup 32 g - organic all-purpose flour
¼ cup 25 g - organic sugar
½ cup 64 g - organic all-purpose flour
4 oz. 113 g - unsalted butter
¼ cup 50 g - organic light brown sugar
½ cup 50 g - organic sugar
¼ tsp. - sea salt
1 tsp. - organic ground cinnamon
1 cup 90 g - organic rolled oats

Steps:

  • Preheat the convection oven to 325 F (165 C).
  • In a medium glass bowl sift the flour. Then cut cold butter into small cubes. Add salt and mash all together using a pastry cutter until it becomes a crumbly consistency.
  • Then add organic light brown sugar, organic sugar, organic cinnamon, real sea salt, and organic rolled oats. Mix everything well using a spoon. Set aside until ready to use.
  • In a small glass bowl add organic sugar and organic all-purpose flour. Mix well until combined and set aside until ready for use.
  • Rinse plums. Cut each plum in half and remove the pit. Then cut each half in half again to end with 1/4 sized pieces. Put the cut plums into a large glass bowl.
  • Sprinkle with sugar/flour coating mixture prepared earlier. Toss the plums with flour mixture until all are covered well.
  • Transfer coated plums into a ceramic baking dish. Cover with oats mixture and bake for 45 minutes at 325 F (165 C).
  • Remove crisp from the oven .
  • Cool crisp for 30 minutes to an hour before serving.

"JUST FOR DAD" PLUMA MOOS (CHILLED FRUIT SOUP)



My father was German-Mennonite and grew up eating this chilled fruit soup. When I was about 15, I found a recipe for it and made it for him. He said it was the "best ever"! I'm sure he was just boosting my self-confidence as a new cook, but I was so proud that I'd made a dish that reminded him of his youth.

2 qt water, warm (not hot)
1 c seedless raisins
1 c dried prunes
1/4 c dried peaches
1/4 c dried apricots
1/2 c sugar
6 Tbsp flour
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
sweet cream (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Wash fruit, add 2 quarts warm water.
  • 2. Cook until almost tender.
  • 3. Prepare paste with flour, sugar and salt. Slowly add flour paste, stirring constantly. Cook until slightly thickened.
  • 4. Serve warm or cold. Sweet cream may be added for extra flavor.
