RESTAURANT STYLE SALSA

Restaurant Style Salsa image

Recipe video above. Just like what you get at your favourite restaurant and those jars sold alongside corn chips at the grocery store.... but it's better, healthier and cheaper! The fresh flavour is so, so good. Make it chunkier or smoother, to your taste.

Provided by Nagi

Categories     Dip

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/4 cup chopped onion ((white, brown or yellow))
1 tbsp jalapeño pepper (, seeds removed, roughly chopped (fresh best, canned ok))
400g / 14 oz canned crushed tomato (, best quality)
4 oz / 120g canned diced green chiles ((Note 1))
1/4 cup (packed) cilantro/coriander (, roughly chopped)
1/2 tbsp+ lime juice
1 clove garlic (, minced)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

Steps:

  • Place onion and jalapeno in the food processor first, then add remaining ingredients (start with 1/2 tbsp lime juice).
  • Blitz to desired consistency - I like mine pretty smooth because you get better flavour out of the onion etc.
  • Taste test with corn chip for salt and lime. Adjust if necessary.
  • Refrigerate 1 hour before serving with corn chips, or other dippers (see in post for suggestions).

2018-04-15 I’ve been searching for a salsa recipe for an upcoming dinner party, and this one sounds delicious! I’m planning to make a batch exactly as written. For a second batch, I’d like some variation. What do you think about adding some fresh/frozen corn and black beans or black eyed peas? Thanks for sharing your recipe…

  • In a food processor, pulse the garlic to chop it more finely. Add the tomatoes and all of the remaining juice from the can. Add the onion, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, and salt.
  • Process the mixture until it is mostly smooth and no big chunks of tomato or onion remain, scraping down the sides as necessary. Season to taste with additional lime juice and salt, if necessary.
  • Serve the salsa immediately or store it for later. This salsa keeps well in the refrigerator, covered, for about 10 days.

  • Strawberry Salsa: We love the idea of adding something new to our salsa, like fruit. This simple recipe is great for dipping, topping or just plain nibbling on.
  • Spicy Corn Salsa: Besides the jalapeños and poblano peppers, it’s fun to see salsa featuring corn as the main ingredient instead of the traditional tomato.
  • Roasted Tomatillo Salsa: If you’re hitting the farmers’ market this week, be sure to keep your eyes out for fresh tomatillos. This salsa is easy to spice up or make mild depending on your taste.
  • Cilantro Peach Salsa: Peaches are everywhere during the summer months, meaning there’s no time like the present to take advantage of original stone-fruit-starring salsas like this one.
  • Avocado Corn Salsa: A twist on pre-made salsa takes hardly any time to pull together. It’s ideal for a last-minute get-together when you’re short on preparation time but still want to impress.
  • Summer Pico de Gallo: This looks like just about the most refreshing salsa recipe we can imagine. A perfect pick for summer shindigs. (via Fox News Magazine)
  • Texas Caviar: The name caught our attention, and the recipe won us over. Nom on this with tortilla chips, stuff it in a burrito or eat it like a salad.
  • Cantaloupe Salsa: If the idea of melon in your salsa hasn’t already made you excited, the colors in this dip alone are enough to get you enthused about whipping it up.
  • Warm Butternut Squash and Black Bean Salsa: We know, you’re used to seeing butternut squash in the fall. But if you’re up to slicing your own squash in the off-season, this warm dipping salsa would make a killer appetizer.
